Anyone else been interested in flying planes (real ones). I decided last year that I don't really give a crap about driving new cars or having the latest TVs or PCs or anything and would rather spend my money on learning to fly a plane. Went to a local flying club, did a test flight and then signed up for instruction. A few weeks ago did my first solo and now buzzing about the local airfield every week or two. Working slowly towards a private pilot's license. Anyone else ever had a go or any pilots on the forum? |

Registered 18 years agoI'd love to give it a go, but I think I'd need a 747 cockpit to fit in. -

Registered 18 years agoCost is £144/hr flying with an instructor or a bit less in the smaller planes. Usually there for 2 hrs with a bit of planning before and discussion afterwards. Cost is brakes off to brakes on, which is typically 1hr. -

Registered 16 years agoDid a half dozen or so lessons a few years back, but it was too expensive to stick with it for what would, for me, have been pretty limited gain. Still lets me say I've flown a plane, though. -

My folks don't know I'm doing it so want to just take my dad flying one day. -

Registered 14 years ago144/hr is a bit much for me. My spending money for fun things is under £500 per month, so that'd take over half with a two hour lesson. -

Registered 12 years agoI got a trial lesson as a present last year. Alan Sugar was in the cafe at the airfield and we heard him over the radio on his way to France later.
I enjoyed it and thought about getting more lessons but it’s not like I’ll ever be able to buy my own plane so not sure what the point in getting a license would be. Is there a Zipcar for planes? -

Registered 18 years ago@Nazo pretty much everyone rents planes, or shares a plane. The 2 hour lesson is typically 1 hr in the air. So only charged for 1hr.
I just got back and did 55 mins today. -

Registered 12 years agoGood to know, I might go back and give it another go. How many lessons do you think it’ll take to get your license? -
I’ve flown a Hercules for about 30 minutes. The pilot asked “who wanted a go”, showed me the basics and then left me and the navigator to it. It was great and I loved every minute of it.
Never been able to afford to learn myself though. -
