Donít think it has its own thread yet, but the announcement was my favourite bit of e3. A legendary series that people had long thought dead, makes a re-entry into the genre to reclaim its crown.

It also looks like it could act as a bit of a vehicle for Microsoft to show off some of its most impressive technology, particularly Azure AI. Trailer below:

No doubt. Also slightly less risk of catastrophic injury.

I just hope they put in VR support. But yes, did not expect this announcement at all.

VR would take this from a curiosity to a must try for me. Even if they never do VR for xbox, even though by now it should happen, for PC it surely could offer support for Vive et al?

    Really looking forward to this.

I had SubLogic Flight Sim II on c64 and Flight Sim II on the Atari ST. I remember it only had small areas (Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco) but if my memory is correct I could leave the plane flying and it would recognise when I arrived in the next area.

Not sure how it would translate to Xbox controller but with keyboard support it may well be a good fit.

I've had a few more sims on the PC but I do miss the Microprose days with something in the middle ground - not DCS but not Ace Combat...

All we need now is for them to bring back Motorcross Madness and Midtown Madness.

Yep but minus the pain that went with DirectX at that time, installing the wrong version over itself etc.

God, those were the days. I forget how Directx used to be massively maligned compared to Opengl.

I think the other thing that is interesting is the fact itís on game pass. I can imagine a whole new crowd may try this as a result - they just need to make sure itís fun and there is some sort of point of doing things in the sim.

I hope it runs better than x-plane in vr. Dcs is good too but some of the planes cost as much as a full game.

Here is a really interesting analysis of the trailer by one of the team that developed FSX:

Itís well worth signing up for the insider programme if anyone is interested. Microsoft are doing a great job of sharing weekly updates including screenshots and short clips of early alpha builds.

Even at this stage the game looks a gigantic step over previous versions. It seems like it streams satellite images into the sim and azure automagically turns all of that into a 3D image in combination with existing 3D data from bing maps. Some of this stuff looks cutting edge across the entire gaming zeitgeist right now, let alone flight sims.

All the videos etc are behind the insider login area so I canít share directly but look at the clips above.

It is one of the longest-running, best-known and most comprehensive home flight simulator programs on the market mcdvoice.

What's the Insider program? Can I do this with an Xbox?

That does look amazing. Bound to be a game I buy on discount in a few years and then realise I'll always be too lazy and in need of instant gratification to actually learn how to play it (hello Kerbal)

Itís something Microsoft do with a lot of their software I think. At this stage I think itís part of their pr strategy to drip feed information, but will become the place to sign up for alpha and beta testing in due course (and as said above, the first tech alpha sign up is on 12th sept).

You can sign up on their website here - https://www.flightsimulator.com/

No idea if you can do it via Xbox. In terms of the Xbox version they havenít really said anything beyond that it will be available on Xbox after the pc release at some point. Itíll be on game pass too :)

Thanks. I've not played anything flight related for an extremely long time but this has me very interested.

My main hope for this one, other than the amazing visuals they seem to be achieving, is that they really think about how to make it fun and compelling for people who arenít going through a mid-life crisis, and donít wish they flew for British airways.

You mean for people that are also going through a midlife crisis but have budgetary and time constraints?

Yeah, a few hundred pounds for flight sim equipment is nothing compared to a lot of other mid-life crisis purchases. Like flying lessons, cars etc.

    Up to date PC... Check
    VR headset... No
Controller.... No (Got to be this https://www.logitechg.com/en-gb/products/space/x56-space-flight-vr-simulator-controller.html)

So which controller and headset should I be looking at for this game?

I think, similar to racing sims, it depends on how much you want to spend. I always got by with quite a basic joystick (and before that an xb1 controller, that actually worked quite well!) but I might buy a proper yoke and rudder set for this one - not cheap, but much cheaper than a decent fanatec wheel.

On headsets Iíve got no idea, they havenít even confirmed VR yet I donít think. I have an oculus rift though and wonít buy another one until the screen doors have completely disappeared.
