I've almost finished the Rijeka, Croatia to Santorini, Greece Bush Trip. This is the easiest of the three (which was blind luck on my part as it's the second one).

It had some real variety, especially some of the strips you're expected to land on. The 13th trip most notably as I literally couldn't find the patch of grass I needed to land on (kopadia dimitri), and as the total flight is about 45 minutes, earning the achievement for that leg was pretty arduous as I needed to do it twice.

The only other thing was the lack of refueling, I just expected each leg to start with a full tank but you need to refuel too.

Saying all that, it's a lovely run, with some interesting descriptions of the places you'll fly over, and ideal for anyone who wants a little more direction in the game.

Hope they do more of these... The game comes with 3.

Yeah I'm two legs into that one. Very enjoyable. Didn't know you have to refuel, huh.

Will it save my progress if I quit out after two legs of a bush trip? I would assume so, but anyway there doesn't seem to be any explicit save function.

If you finished the leg, yes. It should be checked off in the menu.

And FYI the US bush trip is by far the hardest (and most enjoyable in my opinion) as the plane doesn’t have a GPS display, so it’s pure VFR.

Thanks. I'll do the US one last then.

Also how do I refuel? I think that's one of the few assists I still have on for general gameplay, so I don't know if that means it's automated in the bush trips.

For the legs you need to set a key binding to refuel and repair (look for it in controls under the not set filter). None of the other methods (request fuel, call for fuel truck, use a standing pump etc) worked for me. Guessing it’s a bug for now.

I love this and it's extremely engaging, but I cannot get to grips with keyboard controls. As soon as I turn the plane significantly I struggle immensely to get it back and straight without it see-sawing endlessly. Any tips on this?

Use a controller? You must have some sort of compatible bluetooth joypad surely.

I played this briefly but my PC is too crap to handle it even at 720p after about 30 mins the PC overheats and beeps like crazy :(

I wish they'd hurry up and at least announce when it's coming to Xbox.

I'm even tempted to build a new PC if it's ages away.

I think it’s likely to be a good stretch yet before it arrives on Xbox. If I had to guess I’d say it’s around 12 months away, though I suppose if the architecture is very similar to PC it could be quicker. I think there will be a good few months still focussing on getting the basic PC version largely bug free and adding a few new features before they even start talking about the Xbox version.

It will always be a better proposition on a pc too I think, likely to be much more extra stuff (both free and paid) available for it and more tweakable - which is something of a national sport for flight sim enthusiasts.

Well I can tell you my 8700k/RTX2080 can just manage 30fps in 4k and max settings. Dragging down teh settings to 'looks completely shit' baarely gets me to 60fps.

This game is either a fucking beast, or there's huge scope for optimization.

Either way, I can't see this on xbox for some time, and not without a serious effort into optimizing it.

Yeah the framerate sometimes dives inexplicably on my 9700k/2080super and consistently chugs around under 20fps when flying airliners or taking off from Heathrow.

Having said that, it's a magical experience flying with a HOTAS and head tracking. I can consistently find my current and last couple of houses purely using VFR and just enjoy pootling around my area of the country seeing what various things look like (or how an algorithm has grossly distorted them) from the sky.

    See that’s exactly why I didn’t buy a 4k screen and went 21:9 instead.

This is...something else. It really is. Someone in the comments nails it really well by saying this is less trying to inform you about the game and more about someone trying to impress their peers.

Oof, yeah, that’s horrendous. And a massive self own on the whole “the strip mine doesn’t exist, what an analogy for our future hhfffffff” when it turns out it is there and he doesn’t understand how to fly a plane.

Yeah, I saw that last night. The author of the review hangs his whole rambling thesis of a single factual point, then said factual point turns out to be completely inaccurate. So far, even EG's Edwin hasn't quite managed that one.

The review touches on some points worth talking about, albeit badly. But those points belong in a feature or op-ed, not a review.

Bah, I nearly got it yesterday when it was £4 for the early access version. Now it's nearly a tenner. Not much, but I'm not sure where I'd prop my phone up when I'm playing on my laptop on the sofa.

Re: the Bush Trip activities, when flying point to point , does the game record or recognise when you hit a way point or, as I suspect, these are just guides and the real checkpoints are the landings?

Also, I see that using the 'get back on track' option will negate the achievement, but will using outside view do the same? It must be a lot easier to get a visual bead on where you need to go from the outside view.

You can get the credit for completing the leg without hitting each waypoint. In the planes that have the computer screens, with a pink line on your heading indicator, the pink line doesn't reset if you don't get near the waypoint, so it becomes useless effectively. But you can still complete the leg.

Outside view is fine, you still get the achievement - it's just easy mode as you say. I tend to try to do the navigation bits in cockpit then switch to outside mode for the views when I'm happy with my heading.

2 legs down, kept my head in the cockpit too!

Having a decent map alongside (google maps on my ipad) helps a lot and keeps amazing me with the veracity of the in game scenery. Keeping the building details and weather stuff simple, but having ground texture to ultra is helping. Pretty stable frame rates 25-30 fps far, since I'm avoiding major cities etc.

I started configuring my gear stick and pedals into extra controls for this, bit of trouble setting the pedals as rudders properly but having a analogue brake is nice.

Trying to work out what to do with the gear shifter but quite like having 0%/10%/30%/50% throttle just to make landing approaches easier, my flight stick throttle isn't the most even so makes up for that.
