Either way though, Iím struggling to think of examples of this sort of quantum leap in other gaming genres? Best I could think off was the jump to gta 3.

Thereís been a massive media dump today from a secret event MS held last week - both mainstream articles and YouTube videos etc. Just google to find them. I havenít read or watched them all yet obviously, but from what I can remember:

    - even at this stage the consensus this is a massive, generational leap for flight simulation
    - the weather system is incredibly complex, so much so that it can create rainbows from atmospheric data
    - the draw distance is 600km, as opposed to fsx which I think is 100km. Basically clouds and buildings go to the horizon.
    - the lighting model is insane. It produces the right light for time of day, time of year, altitude, atmospheric conditions. Streetlights will light the bottom of clouds.
    - the flight mode simulates air interacting with just over 1000 surfaces on a plane individually, as opposed to FSXís 1. Sounds a bit like xplaneís blade element theory, but isnít.
    - the way the sim generates the scenery means that it will continue to improve over time as it learns what is correct and incorrect
    - doesnít look like vr will be there on release but will come later
    - standard aeroplanes will be deeply modelled and all the systems will work as they should
    - it uses data from things like flight aware to populate the skies with other planes so it should reflect whatís going on in real life. One of the articles suggests you can click on a plane and take control.

The first full length video was released this evening - Ďworldí. The tech really is amazing - Iím surprised digital foundry arenít taking a bit more interest in this at it seems far more relevant to the near future of video games than playing doom on a crt monitor is.

Very excited for this. Had no idea it was being made by Asobo, developers of Fuel - huge game map (5500 square miles) in a not a great game. Obviously they have chops in generating massive worlds though and what they're doing here looks very impressive.

It's first party so it should be. Will hopefully "land" just in time for Scarlett launch. Halo Infinite and this would be pretty compelling. Although they've already said it will also come to this generation I'm not fucking about if new hardware is on the shelves.

That looks incredibly photo realistic on my little phone screen. The images of Brisbane are impressively accurate too. I recently flew over the city and saw it from the exact same angle

Yeah apparently the engine they are using for this is a sort of extreme version of that one (the sort of extreme you get when a trillion dollar company gets interested in you I suppose). They said in the QA thing last week that they built the whole of Seattle in this engine using bing maps, it blew Phil Spencerís mind and msfs was (re)born

Sounds quite scalable - even having an offline mode too. Apparently detail will scale according to connection speed and presumably PC capability. 32 layers of atmosphere linked to realtime weather - I guess that may be a more localized computing action.

Clearly we are seeing current top end quality so I'm keen to see some lesser setups too.

The changing LOD and pop-in is a bit annoying but this looks really good.

Thinking about that, I wonder if a NTSB Simulator type game would be interesting. Investigate a crash, examine the data, listen to virtual CVRs, and try and piece a scenario together and find the cause of the crash.

    Wow, this looks fantastic!
Hope it plays well and is advanced enough for old time simmers whilst having the tools to help newcomers get up to speed

I hope for some sort of progression structure around it. A career mode or something. Notwithstanding the utter beauty of the graphics, I know that Iíll still get bored if you can only fly around aimlessly, eventually.

    https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/vr-is-a-very-high-priority-for-the-microsoft-flight-simulator-team/

Last month, head of Microsoft Flight Simulator JŲrg Neumann said that VR hadn't originally been part of the plan, but the reaction to the E3 reveal and the assumption that it would support VR straight away made Asobo Studio and Microsoft reconsider things. In a new interview with Der Standard (cheers, AVSIM), Neumann has now confirmed that it's a "very high" priority for the team.

I hope so, but the last paragraph of that article is wrong. Unless he means the signing up part.

And yet Xbox team are saying they aren't bringing VR to the new console.
