A thread for anyone who fancies a bit of friendly competition on their shmup, retro or arcade game high scores.|
I figure we'll select a few games and see who can post the highest score for each game each month. Some games have online leaderboards and some don't but you can post your scores here anyway.
Any shmup, retro, arcade or other score attack based game is eligible for inclusion. Any platform is fine although games should be comparable versions (e.g. the NES version of Donkey Kong has different levels compared to the arcade version so isn't comparable score wise).
I'll suggest a game for starters:
Strikers 1945 (available on ps4, xb1 and Switch)
More suggestions...Dog Faced Knight Retro Arcade Romp or whatever. I figure we'll make up the rest as we go along.

Good idea, though I can't find Strikers 1945 on the ps4 UK store. I had it on the ps3 as a twin pack ps2 classics game, but sold the ps3 last year, so it's a no go for me.
It would likely ruin my tenuous grip on the Play What You Buy challenge anyway!
Would definitely be up for this. Will have to dip in and out on a game by game basis.
Yeah, I don't see everyone bring able to play every game, which is why a reasonable selection is needed across various platforms.
Alternately, I suppose you can play whatever game you own and post your score for others to beat. Whatever works for the majority.
Luckily, you only need to play at arcade and retro games about 30 times to mark them as completed in the pigwip challenge. Treat them like spending an afternoon in an arcade.
@rice_sandwich I like that seconds idea. Rankings me of the old 3DS High Score thread, although management of records might be tough over multiple platforms! It would make finding competition a lot easier, however.
I can update the first post with a list of games and high scores. Count your high scores as of today and not one that you made years ago. I might even make a spreadsheet for tracking.
Well, count me in with Virtua Racing on Switch. I'm away this weekend, but will be taking the Switch with me and practicing whenever I get time to myself. Hopefully I can start posting some reasonable tiles early next week.
If anyone has any records they want to submit any time soon, it'll give me something to aim for!

Since every list must contain an outlier game that nobody would actually consider playing, how about trying to beat my 88.939 score in Forbidden Forest for the C64? It's by no means a great score, I'm sure, but it's all I can do right now.
Daredevil difficulty, no score looping allowed - score must be taken either as you lose the last life, or right after you kill the final boss for the first time.
(I'll be amazed if someone actually takes me on the challenge)

I played loads of c64 games but I haven't heard of Forbidden Forest.
Ok, so games up for bragging rights at the moment are:
- awaiting lap times / scores
Judgement Silversword Resurrection
This is a retro style shooter on pc. £3.19 on steam right now.

Have scored 1085010 on silversword ressurection
1135920 for me on normal difficulty.
3798660 on normal difficulty @rice_sandwich
Is fun, like a cross of super star soldier and galaga.
Ouch, looks like I've got some work to do! So far I've made it just slightly beyond the first boss. I like how it's a focused and fairly simple shooter.
I've not had much time to play Virtua Racing, but my lap time on the first track are beginning to dip under 39 seconds. I'm still getting used to to the handlingand figuring out where I can drive flat out. The handling is generally quite satisfying and easy to get a feel for.
It has exposed the drift in my left joy con, though. I'm going to have to replace the analog stick as the car occasionally steers itself. :/
I can't even complete the 5 laps on the beginner track before I run out of time. Same issue with the left joycon for me too.

@rice_sandwich you’ll get there soon enough. You do need to have a pretty much clean race though: good start, no spins, no colliding with scenery.
Is it normal not having to use the brakes? I'm not even sure what the brake button is. I haven't been a able to read the manual as it requires an online connection and I'm still away until tomorrow evening.

3m 24s on the beginner course in Virtua Racing, which is probably the slowest time you can get without failing. I just sneaked over the line as the clock ticked to zero. It feels easier docked than in handheld mode.
I will hopefully have a competitive time for you on Tuesday. It's a very nice looking and feeling game, considering it's age.
Right! My first officially uploaded ranking for Virtua Racing.
Big Forest (Normal) - 00:03:17.59
Fastest Lap - 38.87
I still haven't figured out how to change modes and the manual just flat out doesn't work. I'm going to have to look online to figure anything out.
Also, the car seemingly moves on its own at times. I thought it was Joy Con drifting, but it does it with my pro controller as well. Not sure what that's about.
I've also got helper turned off, whatever that does. Oh, and I can post proof of this unspectacular record to Twitter if need be.
Right, I'm well off the pace. I need to drive 5 clean laps to have any chance of making a dent on your time. I like to play in the most zoomed out view (press x to change) which probably makes it a little more difficult.
I'm using the default mode, but I'm not seeing any disadvantages to any of the view points. I am struggling a bit with the steering, though. Having seen replays of faster times some players are able to make quite sharp turns without the car skidding out on them. They're also taking a lot of corners flat out without really being on a typical racing line.
I seem to be on the right path though. Nobody brakes on that first track. It's just feathering the throttle through the sharper corners. It's all practice, I suppose.
3:19:06 on Big Forest. I need to get a better start to drop less than 2 seconds on the 1st lap.
I'm back into the 3:18's now. Most of my lap times are 39.5's, regardless of traffic. It's consistent, but very occasionally I can get a sub 39 second lap and not understand how.

Done 3:13.59 on that first track, no idea how they're getting 3:08.
I have no idea how you're getting 3:13 on the first track!
