Kind of like Map Man* but going in a straight line and clambering over hedges while avoiding farmers ?

*Map Man was originally aired on BBC2 in 2004 and the Map Man was Nicholas Crane. He often followed routes on assorted old maps. A very enjoyable show.
Radio 5 did a show called Straight Up where they followed the Greenwich Meridian

Just watched it, just as much fun as part 1. He's a complete mad lad.

    This is great fun.

    But.

Why is he so afraid of people? As a Swede spoilt by right of public Access laws I can't help but find the whole thing slightly strange.

"Oh my shit, a house! Better leg it."

Another similar thing to watch is Big Dave's big fat freight hop.

In England there is no global right of way as much land is privately owned. There are rights of way where you can go through including through farmers fields and farms but they marked on Ordinance Survey maps and the public need to abide by them. Not to say sometimes you have to take detour as some group of beligerent cows have cut off the path. There is also the fact that farmers carry guns and shout "get oif moi land!" if they find you - or not - never happend to me in the time I have hiked.

I guess he's worried about being told to leave the land and being thrown off his planned route?

Yeah exactly. He dramatises it a bit by saying things like he'll get arrested for trespassing, but really I think he doesn't want to have to deviate from his line because he has to walk around a farmer's set of fields.

I'm still really enjoying his trek though, don't get me wrong. His amateurish fire making skills makes for a nice difference from the hardcore "survive in minus 20 blizzard" videos I watch sometimes

    (Bog roll and lighter... ffs)

Yeah he kinda just drops that bombshell out of nowhere. Guess he's basically over it.

@AaronTurner much the same from my experience rambling in the Brecon beacons snd Snowdonia. However, those areas have vast areas of national parks which you can wild camp in. Scotland is pretty good for rights of access. However this guy is in mid Wales- not an area I have walked in very much.

Could it be improved with the application of a couple of mooses and a bear drinking cans of Labatts stolen from the back of a pickup?

Actually, yeah - that probably would be more interesting.

Of all the appalling decisions that went into this, the one that gets me is - why on earth didn't he take gloves?

I'm enjoying this. The fact that his biggest fear are farmers/landowners, just how much of the UK is owned by a few. We really are a backward country.

Admittedly I only watched one episode but the fear appeared to be manufactured for tension rather than something which ever transpired.

    You Brits are fucking weird

I do agree he hams it up given he doesn't get caught, but the point is if he does and they want him removed, he will be. End game.

Imagine doing this in Canada... you'd be dead. British "countryside" is not particularly "natural".

It would probably take longer than a day to walk the width of Canada

Well, that too, but also mean that the "countryside" would kill you.

He does have gloves it's just that he doesn't often wear them, I think he mentioned in a YouTube comment that they get sweaty, cold and clammy.

So instead he buggers up his hands .......
  • Deleted user 15 August 2019 09:55:02
You'd think climbing a barbed wire fence or sticking your hand into a throng of brambles would be occasion enough to put them on.

@RobAnybody oh right, hah. Poor glove selection.

Given the things he has to climb over and through this just feels like a massive oversight. A solid pair of gloves would have been first thing on my list.... and it's the middle of winter ffs! Not like its too hot..
