And this is *after* he was suspended from playing for Australia for the ball tampering affair. He doesn't look rusty at all (though playing in the IPL probably helped with that).

From memory Smith was on such a poor run of form in the one day side before his "incident" there was talk of him being dropped. He is a very talented test batsman, no doubt.

Not sure what root could have done differently to be honest. He was without Anderson and smith is stubborn as a rock whenever he bats against england.

At this level you have to have a bowler who can bowl at 90mph. Without it you always run the risk of not being able to bowl sides out. You need that X factor and surprise balls that 90mph brings. Woakes and Anderson are practically the same bowler so I don’t think Jimi would have helped much.

He is a fantastic all round batsman. Rules in the IPL.

Didn't know until yesterday that he initially came in to Test cricket as a No8 and was in for his spin. Remarkable.

I think he's one of the more interesting batsmen around. He uses a lot of unorthodox shots, but not so flamboyant that they affect his reliability.

God we would be ever so fucked without him.
