Just curious who else might be using it and what kind of setup they're running with it. Was surprised in the budget thread when people couldn't understand why I'd want 42Tb of storage |
Anyone else using Plex?

Registered 16 years agoLol. I guess my viewing habits have changed as i got older, i used to stockpile shows on my storage drives, but now with netflix and prime, if something i want to watch isnt on there, i just "acquire" it, watch it and then delete it. I'll never have time to watch anything more than once.
I just have a samba share running on a low power linux server and use that to stream to my tv via KODI or ipad via VLC.

Registered 18 years agoI'm a big fan of Plex. Run a low power Linux box with 5Tb of storage. Very nice way to enjoy shows and movies I can't get through other streaming options. -

Registered 16 years agoHaving a kid reinvigorated my needs, I get to curate his content while giving him a wide choice.
Also the steaming choices aren't that great in Thailand. Having Sonarr linked up to BTN feeding Plex is pretty awesome and a very low effort way of getting your shows once it's set up. -

Registered 10 years agoI have a plex server on my NAS and use infuse as a client on Apple TV 4K.
It’s awesome , I stream 4K UHD BD dumps seamlessly.

Registered 15 years agoI haven't switched on either of my NAS boxes for years for reasons like THFourteen mentions but I do keep my 'to watch' stuff on a macmini in the front room that is attached to the TV and have Plex on it for the bedroom TV to feed off. -

Registered 15 years agoWhat about Open Media Vault? Anyone using that?
I've been meaning to set something up from old parts for a while now. Any expertise/advice would be a great help.

I really should do that. My kids are still young but all they watch is bloody kids youtube all the time.

Sometimes they'll put the usual kids shit on netflix, paw patrol, ben and holly, etc but i can manually oversee that as it's on the television in the family room.
My eldest can't watch a whole film. -

Registered 20 years agoI’ve used it fir years. Primarily for movies for the kid. And Paw Patrol when she was younger.
I run it on my seven year old PC with a few TB of drives for all my shit. I delete TV shows once watched and my movies after watched, unless it’s likely to get repeat viewings. -

Registered 13 years agoI have a 10tb Plex server for TV and mostly movies (700+). The server is a PC with an older AMD APU. It's works pretty well but can't do any transcoding with 4k content. The Xbox One X Plex client is a bit shit too so won't direct play some 4k content for no good reason. It's perfectly adequate for internet browsing, older games and as a media server. I only have it running when I want to watch something so the hard drives are all in good condition even though some are 5 years old. -
I run plex plex a very cheap mycloud with 4tb of storage and a 4tb USB disk. It doesn't transcode so I have to be sure to rip discs to an appropriate format. I've had it running for about 3 years and it does the job. A big plus is that it's about the size of a hardback book and fairly quiet. -

Registered 16 years agoI use unraid as my platform, that handles storage parity and also runs qbitorrent, sonarr, plex as dockers plus some other stuff such as a pi hole and nextcloud.
My windows is run on top of that as a VM with the graphics card passed through so it runs at around 95% of native speed.
That way I have everything in one box.... stoarge, server stuff and a gaming desktop.

Registered 15 years agoI have been using Plex as a way of streaming from my PC to my PS4 and it works nicely but recently it isn't finding the server from the PS4 so I think a reinstall is in order. Sadly I don't have it on any other devices to ascertain if the problem is on the PS4 or PC end... -

Have you tried streaming from the PC it's installed on? -

I have checked it within a browser on the same PC where it appears to work.

My next step would be to check if it works with my phone's browser. -
Weird Plex but okay
