Good news for me: Turns out this is really good.

Stuck some of Saturday night and a large chunk of yesterday into this and am thoroughly enjoying it so far. Looks a little rough on Xbox, but the 4x meets tactical combat mix is just as good as before, only in space so therefore better.

Commie Space Dwarves and Dinosaur-riding Space Amazons are the highlights so far.

Seems to be a ton of content and plenty of depth to get you head around.

Since I got AoW 3 for free on Steam a while ago I think I'll give that a spin first. Either way, the AoW series looks right up my alley, except for one thing that worries me a bit: the combat.

I really don't like it when one battle tends to take as long as numerous turns of managing your entire empire. It feels too fiddly and, particularly later game, a total slog. I have a love/hate relation with the Total War games for that very reason for example.

But again, AoW 3 will probably tell me what I need to know...

Battles aren't massively lengthy from what I remember. I do remember that it's a bloody hard game though.

Tried AoW 3 in the mean time and yeah, it's good. Solid 4X core but with clear HoMM influences as well as RPG lite elements.

Combat's not excessive alright, the limited army size is a good choice. It finds a nice middle ground between the slightly tedious Endless Legend combat and the perhaps somewhat too simplistic Civ 5/6 one-unit-per-tile world map battles.
None of the overlong Civ 4 stack of doom whack a mole or Total War monster battles, thankfully.

Stuck another good few hours into this last night. It really is quite excellent.

The tactical combat is great. My one wish is that the two sides sometimes started further apart, but other than that the unit / ability variety is great, the maps are surprisingly varied and it all works really well.

The strategic side has a more depth than AoW3 now and gives just enough of that Civ/Endless Legend feel. There is loads to discover, a ton of quests and missions, a lot of lore tucked away and having buildings etc behind the tech tree paces the game a little better.

The races are great and the unit variety between is very cool. My only gripe is that I hope future updates / expansions add a little more race variety to colony / empire upgrades, as they tend to overlap a little too much.

All in all though I haven't stuck this much time into a game straight out the gates in ages, so it's definitely doing a lot right.

    Yeah, I'm playing on Xbox.

There are one or two quirks, where things take slightly longer to get to than they would with a mouse, but minute to minute gameplay works really well and the general layout is fine.

I'm completely addicted to this. It's reet good.

My first achievement that popped was "Friendly Fire - Kill your own unit by missing a shot" and now I'm on a quest to avenge my murdered cat.

Damn, I have liked the early Age of Wonders games and having a feeling that I'd love this theme. I find it pretty hard keeping myself glued to my pc after having a Switch comfortably at sofa, though...

Holy shit this game is complicated. I think I have 7 or 8 open missions, while balancing relations with one friendly faction, some rival commanders, an enemy NPC who has their own rival faction, and all on the first (proper) campaign scenario.

    Jesus.

The UI on this is fucking awful, it's really putting me off playing any more. It also does a terrible job of explaining things.
