Registered 14 years agoFeels like we're hitting a point where relative numbers aren't as important as absolute numbers anyway.
When you have a 50 inches screen, you might be able to see the difference between 900p and 1080p. But would you really notice if a game is 1800p and the other is true 4K? And yet, relatively speaking, it's the same difference. Maybe in a 120 inches screen it would be more noticeable. Good luck finding a big enough wall.
Same with load times. It sure sucks if it takes 2 minutes to load a save in The Witcher, while another console takes 50 seconds. But if a console takes 2 seconds and the other takes 5 seconds, suddenly it's not that much of a problem anymore.
Not that it matters to keyboard warriors, of course. But specs aside, this will probably be the closest any generation has ever been to producing the same experience on all platforms.

Registered 10 years agoIn an effort to make sense of that amazing chart from the last page, I read the Wikipedia page about "performance".
And found a photo of a naked woman unrolling Super 8 film from her vagina. So it wasn't all for nothing. -

Registered 18 years agoThis all sounds great but will the difference in speed provide any real advantages to gaming on the PS5 over the X.

I'm really excited by the audio stuff. It sounds pretty whacky what they are doing, I don't know how they are going to manage to calibrate everyone's head. Maybe we'll be measuring our craniums or something.
But genuinely, I'm really happy that they are so focused on the audio experience. -

Registered 15 years agoLike anyone's going to hear any difference. I also don't see devs going the extra mile to do something worthwhile with it, it's not like making games is easy and quick. -

Registered 14 years agoYeah, there's always this problem with strange new tech. Impulse triggers on the Xbox One sounded like a great idea, but very few games actually go past standard vibration. -

Registered 8 years agoIt only works if everyone buys into getting good headsets, from what I gather a lot of people on console don't use headsets except those who properly into multiplayer games. Then we're just looking at normal TV inbuilt speakers. -

Registered 14 years ago@JamboWayOh I invested in a decent 5.1 system a long time ago, but aside from the fact that it will never support any new technologies (it's stuck to HDMI 1.4), I don't think I'd hear much of a difference. I can barely tell a difference between compressed Dolby Digital and TrueHD.
Headsets though, those could be nice. But again, I wonder what kind of quality headphones you'd need to really tell a difference over regular 5.1. -

Registered 16 years agoThey’re implementing it on speakers. They started with headphones.
And people that care about audio absolutely will. This is in no-way confirmed but I almost guarantee you that DICE will do something with it for Battlefield as soon as possible. Audio teams will go crazy over it. -

Registered 8 years agoAnd that's the thing, surely this will require some good kit to make a difference other than it being a tagine on the box like 'sixaxis'. -
No, the best way to experience it would be on headphones I'd imagine, so pretty inexpensive. -
What he said about area sounds sources compared with point sources is very true, I'd be surprised if people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. And convolution reverb, that would really bring places to life. -

There’s no way they’ll bundle that kind of stuff though - the price needs to be kept down. -

You can get decent quality headphones for not too much money, 30-40 euros?
I think I get particularly annoyed with some of the shoddy work that goes into games audio. I think battlefield is different, but when you wear headphones and turn your character round and a sound source completely disappears from one ear - fuck me i find that annoy. It will be a thing of the past with this system. -

Registered 14 years agoI think The Division’s sound work is some of the best I’ve ever heard but the game struggles to load assets on time and doesn’t even bother occasionally under the weight of it all. A dedicated audio solution to pump all that out on time and with great fidelity is great. -

Registered 14 years agoI avoid headphones in general - I find them uncomfortable, even the big kind. A good 5.1 system is a nice surrogate and won't tire my ears. -

Registered 14 years agoSony released an update on backwards compatibility:
https://blog.us.playstation.com/2020/03/18/unveiling-new-details-of-playstation-5-hardware-technical-specs/
We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.
I'm honestly baffled that any titles at all should not work, especially when MS also just confirmed that all X1 titles will be playable on SX, but I guess the vast majority should cover it enough. -
