Well, it's finally happening. And we all thought it was an April's fools joke (which it also was). Yakuza RPG! https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-08-29-yakuza-7-is-formally-announced-and-its-a-big-departure-for-the-series Really looking forward to it. Kind of odd that they aren't handling this as it's own side series like Judgement, but I'm still up for it and the new lead looks fun. |

Registered 15 years agoI had thought that the turn based battle thing may have been a mainline mini game (the bigger ones like hostess clubs, real estate etc). I am curious how well it turns out. And I agree it is nice to see a new base city and one I am not too familiar with (only ever spent a day there) and likely not in whatever red light area this will be set in).
I remain hopeful though as I have enjoyed all the previous Ryuu ga Gotoku games (didn't play the Kurohyou series...) Wonder if it will actually call itself 7 here or somehow reboot the numbering so as not to put off new players that they have to play 7 other games first... I still need to finish Kenzan, Ishin and FOTNS... -

Registered 18 years agoMe too, I love Minato Mirai (it's where I proposed).
Calling it something else seems like a good idea, that way they could run the RPGs and Beat-um-ups series next to each other if they wanted to. -

Registered 2 years agoI think the titling makes sense, in a slightly roundabout way. Japan has a bunch more series spin-offs, some without Kiryu as lead. So numbering it '7' marks this explicitly as a mainline game, even though the protagonist is new.
Outside Japan, I'd argue the Yakuza series has been very much associated with Kiryu until now. Going with the 'Like a Dragon' subtitle makes clear that this isn't his story.
Perhaps we can look forward to a Final Fantasy III/VI-esque situation for subsequent games: Ryu Ga Gotoku 8 in Japan, Yakuza: Like a Dragon 2 elsewhere!

Registered 15 years agoI thought the choice of title was an interesting one (especially with it actually being the original title translated) and also that a 7 would doom it here. Enough people don't want to play 6 without playing the rest without adding more background to it.
Kenzan Kiwami next and a localisation for Ishon
Kurohyou I imagine is going to be left where it is unless they decide to Switch port it... -

Registered 12 years agoI believe all the Ryu Ga Gotoku main-titled games have featured Kiryu. The 2 Samurai games weren't technically him but they used the same character model and voice actor and used Kiryu as a pseudonym (in Kenzan anyway, don't recall for Isshin).
I agree it makes sense to drop the number, but the Japanese game already has a subtitle (the whereabouts of light and darkness), why not use a variation of that? -

Registered 2 years ago@Nazo @One_Vurfed_Gwrx Good points. Incidentally, the Japanese site (ryu-ga-gotoku) highlights that this is a 'numbered latest game'.
I guess for localisation they have sequel(s) in mind. Perhaps the idea is to make Yakuza: Like a Dragon into Ichiban's brand outside Japan. Using the Japanese subtitle instead, or as well, might make things awkward going forward. The next game(s) may well not have the 'whereabouts of light and darkness' tag.
Oh, and having Kenzan and Ishin localised would be great, though I feel unlikely now. I wonder if they'll make a similar period piece for the new guy. Reckon nineteenth century Yokohama as a treaty port hub for Western interaction and industrialisation/modernisation, could be really interesting. Getting a little ahead of things here though! -

Registered 18 years agoIf they don’t have a big fight in the Redbrick Warehouse and a climactic battle ending in someone being thrown off the top of Landmark Tower then I’m asking for my money back.
I know there’s been a bit of wariness about the new battle system but I think they have earned enough trust to be able to do things differently. The last time they shifted genres we ended up with Binary Domain - even if this one doesn’t quite get there then it’s surely still worth the effort? -

Registered 17 years agoWhile the formula for the games have got very samey, not sure turn based combat is right for the games. Really enjoyed Judgment and finishing the side content today but it was get samey and they really upped the random battles that it got very repetitive and RPG the devs can make stretch it out longer.
Will wait and see what its like before writing it off -

Yes, it is. Free upgrade.

Registered 14 years agoAnd thanks for the confirmation! What are your thoughts on the game? -
I am in the last chapter (I expect to finish it today). All in all, it is very, very good. Strengths are story and characters, Ichiban as well as most of the party and many NPCs are just fantastic, as you'd expect. The story starts strong, but doesn't quite keep the high level of suspense that Yakuza Zero had. Humour is top notch throughout.
I do like the battle system, but after almost 50 hours now, I have the strong desire to just mash buttons again and to smash some Yakuza skulls with more immediate crunch, so to speak. It was a nice change of pace, but I hope the next one is a normal brawler again. It does lack some complexity, mind - many similar skills, and there is no positioning or anything like that.
A very, very solid 8/10.
edit: Some grinding is required at one point, but the game is aware of that and basically gives you a grinding spot.

Registered 12 years agoThis is my first Yakuza game plus I'm not really a JRPG guy at all and I've been having a blast with it. Just hit chapter 7 at around the 16 hour mark. -
That makes almost 3 of us here who play this game, amazing. I am pretty sure the Yakuza games made a bit more of an impact on here in the past. -

I recently played through Zero and all the remakes/remasters up tp 6, can't wait to get 7, I just adore the games. I was waiting to see which version was worth getting (PS5 or Series X) and it seems that they're identical so it'll be whichever one goes on sale first.

I really should finish Dragon Quest 11 first though. -
That's dedication - I played 0, Kiwami 1 and 2, 6 and Judgment (well, not finished that one), but not the remasters.
You'll love 7, I am sure! -

7 is a fantastic JRPG and a great new protagonist.
Not that I'm anti Kiryu, the hardest man in Japan, by any means. -

To be fair, I did do it over a 2 1/2 year period and I ended up only playing the first 25% of Yakuza 3 and watching the story on Youtube and the same with Yakuza 4 (although played maybe 70%) as I played it on PS3 originally so I'm not as hardcore as it sounds.

I started Judgment and loved the start but like a sap will hold off to see the PS5 version!

Yeah. And not spoiling anything, but Jo Sawashiro is one of the most charismatic villains I've yet seen in the series. It helps that he looks particularly fantastic (technically, I mean).

I enjoyed and finished 7 in January. Also played through the whole series in release order from the original Yakuza on PS2 with the exceptions of Dead Souls (I do own it and plan to play it), Kenzan (I am partway through) and Ishin (again I own it but will get to it after Kenzan). The only ones I don't own are the Kurohyou PSP games. I also ahve the HD remasters of 3-5 which I will likely play at some point.
And yeah, as much as I like Kiryu, Ichiban works as a nice contrast.
