A point for Scotland looks unlikely at this stage.

Can't call Japan a tier 2 nation any more. They really are in the big leagues now. Also impressed at the number of Japanese in the team. Some good home grown talent, with I think 9 of the 15 players on the pitch being local.
Matsushima especially has done some brilliant things with the ball.

And Japan's defence is so quick, they were against Ireland and they are again today, every time a pass is received there's two Japan players there immediately to stop it going anywhere.

Scotland coach is probably hoping the match gets cancelled at this stage and called a draw

So how do Scotland qualify now? Win by at least 7 points?

Best case for Japan, they go through without the shadow of "what if" over their heads, and based on the pool games so far they've got to be feeling better about South Africa than they would New Zealand (even though both have been storming, SA have looked less invulnerable than the All Blacks).

    :-(

I gave up tickets to the next game...

In the ballot I had SA v Italy, and this quarter. Gave them up as the games were too far apart and I was not confident SA would even get out of teh group the way we've been playing.

Then suddenly this tournament SA are amazing and every game is great. Really regretting my choices now.

If there's 1 team who knows not to underestimate Japan, it's SA.

I hope Japan donít change their game plan. Their attacking style is a amazing to watch. Reminiscent of Fiji playing 7s.... I think SA will be just a bit too strong though. Especially in the pack. I hope Iím wrong though.

But fair play to both teams today, the game of the tournament so far

That was an amazing match, Japan well deserved their win, would love them to beat South Africa. Atmosphere looked incredible!

Agree. We were beaten by the better team on the day, no complaints. Some of the Japanese handling was just ridiculous - the full-stretch pass out of the tackle for one of the tries the pick of the bunch for me.

Iím happy the game was played, and happy that we came back into it and made it a contest for the match itself (though our chance to qualify had gone after Japanís fourth try). Could easily have ended up a draw at the end, but Japan would have gone through as group winners anyway, so I donít grudge them the victory.

All right. QF weekend. Who do you see in the semis?

Forms says Eng vs NZ and SA vs Wales

Iím hoping that England should overturn a pretty average Aussie side (though they did have that win against the ABs in the championship in August)... were the ABs down to 14 though- I canít quite remember?

    Wales should outclass France.

Iíd love Ireland to beat the ABs, I think it could be closer than most people think.

Unfortunately I think SA will dominate Japan in the pack, I think if Japan manage to play their pace of game, they may cause another upset, but SA will be well drilled for it.

Looking forward to 4 potentially exciting matches

...also just seen that Japan have moved to 7th in the world ranking - leapfrogging France...

I reckon they should join the championship with Fiji making another 6 nations. They should then ditch the home/away fixtures and alternate yearly - like the 6N tournament.

Yeah all blacks played the whole second half with 14 men when the Aussies put up their record score. NZ always have a howler in the Tris before a WC though

England squad for Aus is disappointing, if somewhat unsurprising.
