Registered 20 years agoWell played SA. Totally dominated us up front. Pivotal moment when Sinkler went off. Impossible to tell, but it may have improved the scrums...
Not bitter about the result, as the boks played so well (shutting the door just like we did to the ABs last week)... however I was frustrated by some of the decisions and thought Garcès was poor.
1. Clear forward passes in the decisive try
2. Inconsistent reffing in the scrums... England should have had 2 of those scrum penalties ... SA 16 hooker stood up in one scrum and the other was when Marler came on SA had defending scrum. England drove them off and wheeled 90. Penalty to SA? Totally inconsistent...
However, hats off to SA... they thoroughly deserved to win today.... just so disappointing after last week.
Japan 2nd team of the tournament for me and an amazing World Cup! -

But, I think they weren't touching the ball carrier until after contact... -

Well done Bokkie! You guys played an incredible game against an amazing England team.
Do feel bad for England - team has been immense this WC but just wasn't their day. Still a lot to come from them.
Well deserved champions!
Baie geluk!! -

With that username it sounds like you can't stand football either.... Sorry I couldn't resist. I will also be on the rugby bandwagon and be down the pub
Off down the boozer in a hour, free breakfast before and free chilli after game, can't stand rugby but it's free food 😂 -

Registered 16 years ago@Load_2.0 @Tomo Thanks guys. I was little taken aback by the performance. I do think that the AB result last week played into our hands somewhat. Many saw it as "the final" so it took a little pressure off Boks, but piled it onto Eng as they were expected to cruise through it.
Anyway, been a great tournament. -

I can see your point(s) but I still think 2nd is a good achievement to get to a final over all the other teams.

I couldn't disagree more. I genuinely don't see the point of 'runners up medals'. You either win or you are nothing*. That's the entire point of (elite) sport.
Not a fan of taking the runner up medals off. Bit disrespectful imo, you don't see athletes taking their silver or bronze medals off.
I've seen footballers do it but didn't think rugby players would stoop so low.
Save everyone the embarrassment of handing out something they don't want. Any self respecting player would refuse it. Or sell it on ebay.
* I do think individual sports are slightly different. And athletics has a long tradition of podium placement for 1st / 2nd / 3rd, but in team sports you're either the best or just amongst the losers. Liverpool's 'associate winners' position in last season's premier league is a great example - huge points tally, great play; amounted to nothing (domestically)
Anyway, good second half of rugby. SA defense was immense and lovely couple of tries in the end. -

Registered 18 years agoYeah it's hugely disrespectful. Honestly the biggest problem with all English sports is the arrogance.
If your not going to accept/wear your medal. Dont come out to the ceremony, sit in the changing room and sulk. -

I dont think anyone outside of south Africa can understand just how it is not a sport for us, is is the one Unitedr in a fucked up country.
Watching a black guy from the slums lifting that trophy is a symbol that will do more for us than anything else. It is up there Mandela wearing the shirt.
Cant stop crying. -

I think that's pretty harsh. They've just lost the biggest game of their lives. I don't think it's arrogance to not really be in the state of mind to want to appreciate the runners up prize immediately.

Love this sentiment. Seeing him the lift the trophy will be just as iconic as Pienar’s handshake. Enjoy your night man.

Or you could argue that you take it off when you feel you didn’t perform well enough to deserve it. There’s a difference between a sore loser and being disappointed with yourself, but England teams always get lumped with this label of arrogance even when there’s been absolutely no sign of anything you could remotely mistake for it, it’s as boring a cliche as anything

Plenty of countries lost big games this tournament and they all showed each other respect at the end of the game.
It's pure petulance. -

Registered 17 years agoIt's a fair argument and definitely something to strive for. I think we expect too much of elite sportsmen to always hit that mark though. It's definitely not just an English thing either. -
