Sequel to the moderately-successful sci-fi Soulslike. Apparently rather more ambitious than the first one and five minutes of mucking around with the PC version suggests that the tech powering it looks decent. Don't seem to be (m)any reviews yet, which may or may not be worrying. Moderately high hopes for this myself. This is by the Lords of the Fallen devs, which doesn't sound promising (LotF being the notorious "shit Soulslike"), but the first Surge game was fairly good. Second one has apparently had a bigger budget and some time to learn the lessons from the first. Still doesn't seem to have guns, for those who find themselves triggered by the lack of opportunity to express their Second Amendment rights (or international equivalent). |

Registered 16 years ago@Decks Ah, embargo seems to have just lifted.
Edit: Coming in with 7s and 8s. Bit lower than I'd hoped, but consensus seems to be that the combat is excellent but the story and characters a bit shit. Think I can live with that (given I'm currently enduring the story in Gears 5 for the sake of the gunplay).

The Surge remains the best non-From Soulslike I've played. The level design in particular was amazing and on a par with Dark Souls. The combat managed to combine the slow and heavy swings of DS with the quick dodge-stepping of BB and worked really well I thought. There was also a lot less emphasis on boss fights and more emphasis placed on level exploration, unlocking shortcuts/upgrades and working your way past regular enemies. That said, the few boss fights were pretty good too. It brought back that feeling of peril and caution from my first play through of DS1, which From's various other games since then haven't managed to do.
Looks like they haven't made too many drastic changes for the sequel, so I'll definitely be getting it at some point. -

Registered 16 years agoThe definition of 'when it's free', for me.
I finished the first one and played it for hours but I kind of hated a lot of it. But the gameplay loop was really compulsive and it dragged me through the last few super shitty levels, so I will definitely play no.2 when it hits xgp or whatever but no way am I dropping 50 quid on it. -

Registered 6 years agoI still have the first one to play at some point. I find the the Souls games to be a bit of a joyless and stodgy hate fuck though so the thought of Aldi Souls doesn't really fill me with anticipation. I do generally prefer scifi to dungeons and dragons though. -

Registered 16 years agoI thought that but rather than the lush, open vistas of dark souls, you are wandering through generic sci-fi factory #278 for several lifetimes.
It starts off alright but then boxes you into two of the most boring environments I've ever seen. -
Still never played this despite owning it on 3 platforms. Just never fancied starting a playthrough. -

Registered 8 years agoYeah I'll grab it at some point. I liked The Surge but not enough to playthrough more than once or even do the DLC. It also took me three attempts to get through it after ditching it at various points. It had a lot going for it but I personally found the combat let it down despite liking the limb targeting system. It just felt too loose and woolly. The level design (layout, not aesthetics) was really bloody good but visually, yes, it was a bit drab. Sometimes I felt like I was just working in the amazon warehouse. Boss fights were great though, bar one, and I did like the fact there were only a handful and most of the time was spent exploring the labyrinthian (sp?) levels.
There wasn't enough variation in build or weapons though. I'm sure there's more here but I just can't get excited for it.
Besides I want to see how Code Vein reviews as I'm quite intrigued by that for my souls-like fix. -
Might be a full price purchase for me as I really liked the first one, more of the same but improved somewhat is fine by me. -
ACG liked it for what it's worth.

Registered 6 years agoBeheading people is probably my favourite thing to do in a game worryingly. It's why Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 are my favourites. Just popping their little heads off. -

Registered 16 years agoThey tied everything to it last time. Resource farming, recovering health and mana, the lot, which is why it was so fucking tedious by the time you reached the end.
I mean, yes, if you want to upgrade your arm armour, you need to chop someone's arm off, fine. Don't make me do it another million times. -

There is certainly a very good chance that the sequel will be an improvement, what with the first game not being very good.
Hopefully they depart entirely from what came before since I found practically nothing to like about the first game, which is quite an achievement.
