Recommendations for a multiplayer game

Normally team up with a mate to play stuff but got into a bit of a rut.

Have rinsed all the fun out of games like World of Warships, War Thunder, Stellaris, PCars and many others. Recently(ish) we bounced off Borderlands 3 and Arma3.

From that list you can tell we are genre agnostic but need something to get our teeth into that is reasonably pick up and play yet has a bit of depth. Ideally something that doesn't require us leveling up at the exact same time to keep it fun.

Inevitably we have differing tastes so for example I love Slay the Spire and he hates card-based mechanics etc. DOTAs are not ideal either.

Been doing this for nearly 20 years so was wondering if there was anything we might have missed in the last while that is the new shiny.

I'm guessing this is online MP and do you prefer competing against each other or teaming up?

Lastly, I guess football is not on the menu?

Thanks all for the replies. Tried most of those but might give a couple another shot. Might even try something like Divinity 2 for a change of pace.
