Registered 14 years agoI looked at moving back down near London to be closer to my fambly and the sort of thing I could get with TfL or LUL equivalent to my grade here, even with London weighting, was not liveable on (imo) in Nodnol. I'm not on peanuts but not galactic megabucks either. I hold a fair few safety critical competencies as well as having a fair bit of major incident experience and the job I was looking at was fairly hardcore (dealing with dead people and life-changing injuries, all the fun stuff).
Fuck knows how police and first-responders live there. From what I understand, they all live in Essex and commute in, which is nearly as expensive. I know people who've been on-call 1-in-3 sleeping in their cars to cover shifts because that was the only option as they lived so far away from their base/office. My sister gave up being a (specialist) nurse in London because even with weighting and key NHS worker housing discount etc, it wasn't liveable.
If you're getting paid less, I don't understand how you can exist there.
I don't understand megacities in general now full stop: sure, all the City/Manhattan/Palo Alto types and whatnot don't even notice the costs, but how do the rest of the people who, y'know, actually maintain the infrastructure and provide the services exist? -

Registered 14 years agoSo it's a short-term thing that can't be sustainable and will fall over? Or there'll be a major housing crash or something? Or Land of the Dead with a few rich people living in high rises and tumult in the streets (which is already most of South and Central America, I suppose).
Unless a lot of money is thrown at the police and NHS, they'll fall over sooner rather than later: I looked at going in at inspector grade for the police which used to be the brass ring internal-promotion wise: now, no-one wants to do it and they're crying out for external candidates. No-one wants the caseload/stress. -

Registered 3 years agoVancouver is less affordable than London (think we are the second least affordable city after HK). Things like Bill 28 (20% extra tax on foreign property investment) has helped slow it down, a bit. But its still mental -

The one around the corner from the Louvre is the worst one I've ever been in. When we went travelling to Paris (wonderful place, you simply must go) I was busting for a shit and it was the closest. The whole place smelled like a bucket of warm sick and the toilet looked like the one out of trainspotting.

Ha that reminds me... This was done in the last place I visited (in France). Not only did they serve me a burger without any actual meat in it but it took ages for them to get me a replacement, all the while my fries got cold and my wife finished hers (I was being very polite about it for fear of getting some extra "sauce", the staff there clearly didn't give a fuck either way though - can't exactly blame them either to be fair). They also had the touch screens fwiw.
Every McD I've been to recently have started with table serving. You order at the touch screen and get a number sign to place at the table. My dad was obviously very confused by this the first time and stood where the till used to be the whole time. He refused to believe that he would get his food otherwise.
Serves me right for going there in the first place (in case you haven't guessed, I'm not a fan!).
I clenched and made it to a nice cafe that didn't make me think I was going to catch the black death just by being in there. -

Registered 16 years agoI went to the McD in kings cross about 15 years ago to use the toilet, someone had had a shit then smeared all of their waste over every reachable surface of the cubicle - walls, floor, toilet, cistern, door handle etc. I had to put two layers of paper on the seat before sitting down

Registered 14 years agoThe burger king across the way from St Pancras is the worst: tiny toilet you can't turn around in to discourage smackheads and always backed up with shit. -

I was once in a Mcdonald's in Florida and felt the need for a shit. I went into a cubicle and it was just caked everywhere. No wonder there was no cleaner in sight. He/she probably quit when they came across that nightmare.

Registered 6 years agoI'd still rather have a Burger King than McDonald's if I had to have one. At least it kind of feels like actual food. -
Edible foodlike substance. Maybe the burger 'meat' actually comes from the toilets? -

Registered 14 years agoThey should bring Johnny Rockets over here: a million times better than BK/McDs and you can have any burger made veggie.
Plus, the toilets weren't roiling over with bubbling shit volcanoes when I've been in there. -

Registered 12 years agoVenice is the absolute worst for this. They say the smell comes from the water, but I'm almost certain it's actually coming from the tourists shitting themselves out of sheer refusal to use one of the 3 Byzantine-era Cholera nests that are actually open for the public to use. -

I go for shake shack burgers over in n out. I just had one at Penn Station in fact. Much better here in the US than in the U.K.
