    My home office is in a bit of a mess at the minute with boxes all over the floor, but my resolve has broken and I'm going to have to commit to some emergency tidying today, put my lighthouses back up and get this installed ASAP. I don't often play games at launch because I have a massive backlog, but I really NEED to play this.

    Watching Ian playing this, when he got the gun he wasted all the ammo and I was thinking 'you donkey, what are you gonna do now?'

    Then Alyx says "Russell, I'm out!" He leans out the window and chucks another mag. I shouldn't have doubted Valve.

    Are you talking about the 'quarantina giorni'? It's not a joke, it is literally the derivation of the word quarantine.

    And ladders. I have never had my arms, eyes, and brain fooled by such realistic vr ladders before :)

    The joke part is the buffoony character talking about it in his insensitive way. Like I said, it's a coincidence that there are parallels to draw with current times that brought me out of the game and made me decide to turn it off for a while.

    I want to get back on it, but making the most of the sunshine. However, I'm still reading about it, and this bit from a review is spot on. Spoilered just in case -

    Reloading in the dark is another thing altogether, because it you're using the hand your flashlight is mounted on to reach over your shoulder into your backpack—which means you briefly can't see whatever monster is lurching toward you. Using two hands to move an obstruction or lift a heavy roll-up door requires putting your gun away, and sometimes there's something waiting on the other side of that door. The slow pace of Half-Life: Alyx allows you to build up a bit of muscle memory for performing all these actions, but it also delights in testing you. I failed that test plenty of times, including once where I accidentally switched from my gun to an empty hand and pointed at a zombie instead of shooting it, and the time I tried to load a sardine can into my pistol because I thought I'd gravity-grabbed a fresh mag off the floor.

    It's not for me - I have to approach the ladder, then look up and use one of my arms to reach a high rung, grab it, then pull my hand down and my vr body goes up a few rungs, then I have to use my left hand to reach a higher rung - I'm effectively pulling myself up a ladder using my hands.

    Haha, just read in a review that you can give the finger to the combine with the index controllers - gotta try that later :)

    OK - with all this hype and enthusiasm I coughed up the £45 for this. Downloading now - lets see what all the fuss is about.

    Hmmm...is it because I'm blinking?
    I'm using continuous motion and I get pinged to the top quite often. They are inconsistent.

    I got that at the beginning because the right stick on quest is also for changing weps and i would inadvertently teleport heh

    You can turn on realistic ladder climbing in the options. But holding down move to ping to the top always works regardless.

    Ryzen 1600x does a good job, mixed with 32gb ram and 2060 super, it recommended high on all settings and runs 90hz fine so far. Only about 1500x1500 per eye, not tried changing anything yet except controls.

    I like smashing windows with the pistol, so satisfying.

    I think the official minimum gpu is a 1060, but you could always try it and refund if it doesn't work out.

    I wish I didnt try Boneworks before this, not a statement on which is better but I expect a few things that wont happen.

    Although it defaulted to High, I seem to be fine running on Ultra (3600+2070s). Sense of place is really impressive. Had a break and for one tiny second I almost tried to pull the cheese towards me in my kitchen when making a quick sarnie.

    Unfortunately I'm getting massive reprojection no matter what settings I choose. The first chapter and a half were buttery smooth and now everything is choppy. Damn shame.

    Make sure you turn your desktop resolution right down - soz if obvious - worked for me

    Quick question to all you guys who own and have played this.

    Can you play it siting down, at your desk or does it need to be in a large clear space?
