Well, it was Microsofts event, and they curated the games and videos shown, so it kind of it IS their fault it fell flat.

This. They (Ubisoft) had been saying "first look at next gen gameplay" hyping it up, they didn't deliver. No gameplay.

    Their opportunity; their car-crash.

One of our clients is a gaming company and they pulled a lot of work when E3 got cancelled. Pretty much all brand/communications/content work ceased because of Covid because they didnít know when theyíd need it.

So it could be a lot of the content just wasnít ready. That said I agree it was their event and their choice.

I donít understand that Scorn game. Itís key point seems to be itís repulsive. For me personally that amounts to I donít want to see it or hear about it.

I think it was a poor decision to put something like that in a promotional presentation.

@ratso I felt the same way about the Senua game at the series x launch. Big turn off - seemed like a poor choice.

Is Scorn made by Ridley Scott or something? Every second of the trailer looked like it was ripping off Alien. Weird.

More of a H.R. Giger influence. There was that adventure game which he had a hand in years ago which I loved. Canít remember itís name.

At first I thought it was an ad for gaming headsets with crappy microphones.

Yep. An excellent game which I enjoyed.

Looking back, I guess some of the mechanics have not aged so well. I still have memories of having to go through THAT morning routine each time you wanted to leave the house.

It was a great story, setting and adventure, though.

Watched df's video this morning with there reaction to the presentation. One thing that surprised me was their opinion of the capabilities of the X. They basically said you'll likely have ray tracing OR 4k 60fps. You're not going to have both.

This is not even so much about the X. You're unlikely to have 4k60 on a high-end PC gfx card when "ray-tracing all the things", and the same is even more true on any lower-specced HW (like the X or PS5). That's why there's suddenly such a huge interest in filtering / scaling / denoising (so you need to do less of the expensive things).

There'll surely be 4k60 titles (on PC, X, or PS5) that use ray-tracing, but like all uses of it ó you need to choose where to cast those rays for biggest impact; brute force isn't feasible (yet?).

I think that's a given based on what a pc can achieve now.

Yeah, ray-tracing is really heavy on even the higher tier PCs. It's too be expected. Games have always balanced higher fidelity graphics and framerate anyhow.

Yes, Iím thrilled at the prospect of sacrificing frame rate for fancy effects that look good in stills again next generation.

I think 30fps is going to be much rarer in the next gen.

I think full ray tracing is not going to be that common (I can see it being more prevalent as time goes by / devs learn to optimise better). But it could lead to 30fps options.

Yeah, I'm kind of thinking (hoping?) we see something along the lines of 1080/30/RT and 4K/60 modes or something. That might be a bit of work, though.

I'm sure we're going to see many more 60fps games in the first couple years, when games will still be made to work on PS4/X1 as well. Even from Sony, because even if they won't support the PS4 anymore, I imagine that their first few games will be made on old engines.

Once devs start going full steam ahead on the next-gen consoles, though... I'm sure 30fps will become the norm again. But darn, it will be some beautiful 30fps.

I thought the actual gameplay video (yes, gameplay!) for The Ascent looked pretty impressive if you watch the 4k video. Well, not so much the cut-scene at the end.

Not convinced it looks especially fun to play, though.

That fucking EA woman ended it for me. Why the hell did they put some EA marketing face up there to tell us 'How much she loves connecting creatives with developers' What utter tripe and EA have a long way to go before they even deserve to speak to a real gaming audience imo. They should just fuck off and start making non-trash filled games that actually play well and are worth the price of admission.

Honestly I tend to just tune out anything that isn't actual footage of games. They just repeat the same bullshit they always do in these things.

I wonder if memory will become an issue again. It's just doubled over the PS4 and X1, whereas a generational leap would usually bring at least 8-16 times more memory.

Then again, the PS4 and X1 had a lot of memory already.

Console games are always better optimised than PC so I wouldn't be pessimistic about what can be done with the new hardware. Devs have worked miracles this gen on really slow mobile CPUs and even more so last gen. 4K is still very expensive on PC and HDR is very niche.

    @Malek86
I think the faster SSD means less has to loaded into RAM at any given time as it can be retrieved much faster from the SSD than before. So this gen more RAM will be available for what you see and play in the moment as opposed to whatís potentially going to be loaded.

Itís going to be a high end pc at a lower price, but still expensive by console standards. So 1080p for raytraced stuff or 120fps. And with reconstructive techniques theyíll hit 4K60 for the games that have to run on older hardware too.
