Registered 5 years agoThe name might work if they go with Series X on its own, but time will tell. If folk genuinely found Wii U confusing as a name, this is every bit as confusing. -

They definitely did. To this day when I try to talk about Wii U games to my gamer friends - usually mentioning the latest Switch port or something - they always ask me what the fuck it was.

"Some sort of add on to the Wii wasn't it?"
I've literally had a friend ask me that while they were holding it in their hands -

Registered 14 years agoI still say the failure to recognize the Wii U as a new console wasn't just due to the name. Sure, that didn't help, but overall it simply showed that the Wii's audience wasn't interested enough in console games anymore to actually get informed anyway. Even if they had called it something different and catchy, it probably would have failed to attract its intended audience all the same, since they had since moved onto smartphone games like Angry Birds.
Not that Xbox Series is a less ridiculous name, but I don't think the name will be that much of a factor for its eventual success or failure.

So what you're saying is that they make an entirely new machine that isn't the X as a base entry point to next gen. Gotcha.

Which is impossible for everyone that already owns one, so would make it the dumbest thing to do to new models - how would they message that some Xs are new and some are old, and the capabilities of each are wildly different?
I can't see the current machines being an entry way to new games unless they're developing every game on all platforms, which means you'd also be able to use all current gen models. It's a messaging shit show.

Registered 14 years ago@Derblington yeah. The CPU difference alone would make things very annoying for devs. If they really want to mantain a healthy two-machines model, they will have to be similar in most respects. I mean, they could perhaps re-use the X1X GPU perhaps, maybe as a die shrink revision. But nothing else.
Things were already bad enough with the S after the X came out, although in that case, most games were made on the base PS4 so they had to deal with that exact CPU anyway. But with a new gen, that would be the best chance for a clean slate.
Or they could keep the X as the base entry point, but if you ask me, that would be a very bad idea. -

Remember games will work on this gen, the mid gen and next gen, so things are different.
They dont need people to upgrade they need them to subscribe.

I think it's heavily rumoured that there are two next gen xboxes, the lower cost one is possibly discless.

Registered 13 years agoI am expecting them to launch with 2 versions.
An all singing full version for £500 and a cut down version with no disc drive for £300.
I think they will want to be able to advertise that they have the most powerful console and also the cheapest next gen console. -

Don't worry, I'm sure there will also be another Gears of War game as well, eventually.
Fifa, Forza and Halo in the trailer? Yay, another generation of the same franchises
Oh, and one (1) token indie game just so they can claim they have new exclusive IPs.
They should have called it "Xbox NeXt" because what they've done here isn't nearly American enough. -
