The overpriced expansion drive is back in stock on the microsoft store if anyone has rewards credits burning a hole in their pocket.

@Baihu1983 Why aren't you just getting it through Game Pass?

It is tiny. I've seen pics etc. but really didn't appreciate quite how small it actually is. That 220 price tag seems even more extortionate now.

Because size is what determines value? I think I paid about 180 for mine - maybe 30% more than an equivalent PC part. Definitely a lot of cash, but it has been great not having to worry about storage on the thing at all.

No, it's just an observation of perceived value, I'm not actually complaining. Besides, in actual cash out of my own pocket terms it only cost me ~75 the rest being rewards credits/quidco etc. which don't count so for me it was well worth it.

If anything, I'd say it justifies the price more, not less. Fast tech in a compact size is more impressive than the same speed and disk space in a large block.
Also, it's really not that much more expensive for what it is. I've been looking to get an external SSD for backwards compatible titles that don't need the faster read speeds, and it's harder to justify those when they're not much cheaper than the official expansion card.

@Baihu1983 looks like most of the usual UK suspects have a boxed preorder for under 60

Exactly, the smaller the SSD is but faster it is the more expensive

I just got a pretty bog standard SSD bus one .. 1TB for 60 quid on ebay .. good for all the non XSX titles and still way better than an HDD

Flight Sim has now installed itself over my placeholder. Seems to be 42GBs for the game, and 55GBs for the offline world map.

I wonder if it will support quick resume, because it seems a lot of games nowadays don't bother.

Does that mean you can just download the initial 42GB and stream the map online?
I mean, that's a lot of SSD space otherwise.

Edit: checked for myself. Yes, the offline maps are optional.

@Malek86 Quick Resume still seems to work for most of the games I've tried, especially first party. I've gotten back into State of Decay 2 recently and it's extremely impressive on that, straight back in even from standby

@hedben2013 these months I've played Metro Exodus, Bloodroots and Death's Door. Not one of them supported it.

What exactly is the issue with just making it a system-level feature? I mean, I understand that online games might have trouble with it, but it doesn't sound insormountable. And none of those games are online anyway.

Online games still try to do it, even. GTA Online and Fortnite both attempt Quick Resume and then either display a "you were logged off due to inactivity" message or just "reconnecting". So yeah, guess there's no reason it shouldn't work for every game... still very glad to have it on the ones that support it though

It's weird because a fair few old games seem to support it out of the box. Doom 2016 especially

No w for that retching, ayne.

Unless you mean we are all wretches, which would be out of context but fair enough.

Yeah, it's annoying, not the least because having to remember which games actually support it and which not makes the whole idea a tad useless. I now need to remember if the game I am playing actually supports it, etc. Without consistency, I might as well save every time.

I love Quick Resume, but it's *not* an alternative to saving. Always save your game!

It would be nice if you could at least move the offline part to a different disk, but it seems to be tied to the main stuff that needs to be on the internal to run. Guess I'll just try deleting the offline part and hope it works well without it (I'll only dip in every now and again, so not worth giving up 100GB of limited internal space imo)

No, why would I? Thats most of the benefit of Quick Resume gone if I have to make sure my game is saved properly because the kid wants to play Minecraft.

I still get a lot of benefit even with the inconsistency. Don't forget you can pin a Quick Resume folder to the dash to see what's in there. Hopefully as more natively built games emerge the problem goes away.

Most games auto save very regularly now. I can't remember the last time I lost a game save due to a powercut or some software based fuckery, or just forgetting to save.

That is true, but with new-gen loading times, your savepoint is probably further away than it takes the game to boot from scratch, anyway. :)

That said, I had my last "lost" savegame in F1 2021 on the PS5, just the other day - PS5 didn't wake up from standby, and I had to repeat the entire race.
