Once I built a house by dropping sand into a lake from a boat, digging out all but the outer layer, and then building a little hut at the bottom before refilling the bit I'd dug out.

Might have been in Minecraft but I'm sure the principle's good IRL

But we're all fat and lazy now. So I think it's a bit different.

I’m probably going to open a can of worms here, but either way we are going to have to learn to live with rising temperatures and sea levels, even if we cut emissions.
Cool. My flats on the first floor on top of a hill. £££

It was also a tiny number of humans on a tiny patch of land. Some would survive but potentially billions wouldn’t.

Millions would probably die the minute takeaway delivery is ended.

Saw on the news yesterday that towns in New Zealand are under a thick smog from the fires too. That’s the equivalent of 1200 miles, that on our terms is London to St Petersburg. It’s pretty mad.

It’s annoying enough that that the bbc almost certainly put in a qualifier why it might not be climate change in every news report but the Aussies are on a whole new level. Their murdoch owned leading newspaper have been leading with other new stories on their front page rather than their country being burnt to a crisp

Well no, the newspapers here have had fire-dominant front pages for many days now. I don't think anyone is ignoring it.

So, the BBC seem to be treating Greta Thunberg like she was a member of the Royal family: any mundane changes to her social media is reported as news:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-50989594

Am I missing something? I know she has spurned a big movement among the youth, but I remember before Xmas the BBC had three different stories about her on their front page, none of them featuring anything new or interesting. Is she a bigger activist than I'm giving her credit, or are the BBC just illuminating someone for the sake of it?

It was the big thing on Twitter on a day when the media badly needed a funny counter-story to the Iran stuff.

She is frankly a pretty big deal though. Without question the most famous activist in the world right now.

I’m in Australia just now. Now miles away from the fires as I’m in Queensland. Last week though, in the Adelaide Hills my brother had to pick his kids up from childcare as fires were getting a bit close.
Conversation with his wife , an educated Economist who seemed fairly progressive minded and comment such as “the world won’t end tomorrow” and “the media exaggerate “ came from her mouth, as her country burns around her.

    We’re fucked.

Australia will have to wait almost another 3 years to vote out the climate-change denying, fire-service cutting, Murdoch-backed government they have now.
