    #19 - 07/05 - Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PS4)

Oof, what a game. Did loads in 0 and Kiwami 1 but think I did even more in this one, incredible series! I've got all of the remaining games on PS4 to play and am really considering going straight into 3, but think I might do Assassin's Creed Odyssey finally.

However before that, going to plough through a couple of shorter games I've already started to finish them off properly so I don't feel the guilt of leaving them half finished! So once they're done, will make that decision on 3 or Arse Creed Odyssey.

ACO is a long one, Y3 isn't too bad (in its original incarnation, not played my remaster yet). Y5 is the Yakuza equivalent to ACO in length though...

And it seems we finally have a Y7 announcement, althoug h I don't see a date...

Loved it, though certain things pissed me off a little like the online co-op suffering from lag. I felt it was a pretty fair game except for the mobs of knife wielding Galsia.

Looking forward to trying it in local co-op with a few mates when possible. Probably one iíll dip in and out of over the coming year to unlock the rest of the characters. Great game.

Mental story, reasonably good gameplay although some really shitty sections that brought the experience down.

Going to do post game stuff until I get sick of it and move on to Yakuza 3.

Been playing this on and off on the Switch but realised I have neither the skill nor the inclination to get good enough to see it through properly, so put it on free play and just bungled my way through spamming continues. I can imagine if I'd played it back when it came out on DC I would have been properly obsessed as it's clearly a brilliant game but there's too much other stuff waiting to be played.

Planned to finish the last two by end of next week but smashed them so a week ahead!

Still the king of the military shooters, very much fun. Finished all but one mission on Veteran, I suspect many will remember which one that is.

Started Okami the other day finally after buying it on release on PS2, on release on Wii, on release digitally on PS3 and on release digitally on PS4, determined to finally play and finish it! Also think I'll play Outer Wilds alongside it, excellent stuff.

Definitely one of my favorite stories in any medium. Enjoyed the Survivor play through though some sections were a lot tougher. I liked how most of the fights with Clickers could be completely avoided if you stayed quiet too.

    3. Raging Loop (Switch) (12/2/20) (8.5/10)
    4. Sam and Mix Hit the Road (PC) (14/2/20) (7/10)
    5. Dead Rising 3 Untold Tales of Los Perdidos (PC)
    5.3 Chaos Rising (17/2/20) (7/10)
    5.4 The Last Agent (21/2/20) (8/10)
    6. Assassin's Creed Directors Cut (PC) (25/2/20) (7.5/10)
    7. Dx2 Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation (Android) (11/4/20) (7.5/10)
    8. Assassin"s Creed Odyssey (PC) (25/4/20) (8.5/10)
8.1 Legacy of the First Blade (5/5/20)(7/10)
    9. Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise (PS4) (28/4/20) (8/10)
    10. Disaster Report 4; Summer Memories (PS4) (18/5/20) (8/10)

Finished 1 of the 2 ending routes on Disaster Report 4, was planning to finsh other and epilogues the day after but may be a while so posting now. Choosing a score was challenging with some of the flaws but I erred slightly higher due to generally enjoying the atmosphere. The location and art are nicely done and capture the feel of a Japanese city nicely. Nice range of environemnts depicting various aftermaths. The frame rate was fine on base PS4 with a few slower moments (PC is the choice if you want fully smooth framerate). Voices are Japanese and decent ebough and localisation seems okay. Controls are a little clunky but managable enough. Earthquake effects are well done.

The idea of the game spending a bit more time showing the days after the main event is an interesting one but there are some major flaws. Often instead of a dialogue choice you get to choose what your character is thinking but that choice seems to affect nothing. The food, drink, toilet mechanic seems pretty superfluous too. The biggest flaws are situations like on day 4 (I think) where there are two major scenarios you are involved in where you have no choice bit to go along with what the story demands and would really have been a major improvement if you could take alternate paths through some scenarios (those 2 especially). Also, you don't seem to be able to cause consequences for 'bad' characters, they just seem to get away with everything (maybe it is more realistic but the previous games gave you some agency). Some stories are serious, some are silly, some are sad, the balance is generally okay and being able to revisit previous areas over the days to see how things have changed (whether deteriorated or cleared) and re-meet characters adds to the atmosphere.

Despite this, and the expected final chapter story craziness, I enjoyed my time with it. I will get the other ending when I get the chance and play through the epilogues and maybe get a few more trophies (and give a figure). I got it on sale for 30 quid which was a fair price, it shouldn't be the £50+ RRP.

On other notes, onto final dungeon of Trails in the Sky SC, last boss of EDF 5, almost at tye end of Beautiful Desolation and playing SMT IV (not at route split). Lockdown and homeschooling gets in the way...

Wow. Just wow. An absolute 10/10, the PS2 era really was magnificent for games like these. 55 hours and loved every second.

Now to do Wolfenstein: The Old Blood I think before getting back to the Yakuza series with 3 :)

    11. Trails in the Sky SC (PC)(21/5/20) (9/10)

Finally, after 110 hours (maybe remove 5 or so for wasted time left on) finished off TitS SC. An oldie but I really enjoyed it. Oersonally I think the graphic style holds up really well. A mix of handheld (on my Linx Vision tablet) and on the main PC in 21:9. From around halfway thrkugh played with the voice mode which added to it too. Story was interesting and sets the scene for the next 7 games in the series. Music is catchy and battle system is fun. I tried to go completionist without a guide but missed a few books and somehow didn't get all the guild quests. Played on normal and had a few spikes towards the end but was reasonably balanced. Final boss had a bloody annoying special move that caught me lit not paying attention so had to beat it in my 3rd attempt. I will buy 3rd on the next GOG sale and have a break until then.

    12. Beautiful Desolation (PC) (22/5/20) (9.5/10)

14 Hours of gametime and 32% of trophies and Beautiful Desolation is finished. A nicely atmoapheric post apocalyptic point and click adventure set in Africa. A very Fallout 1 vibe to it too with talking head conversations and a weird and wonderful cast. A blend of sci-fi and African inspired mysticism by the makers of Stasis and Cayne. Very professional looking art and graphics and decent sound effects and voice overs. The main characters are interesting enough and you can shape your main character through dialogue and actions throughout the game. The story is interesting with a mix of traditional and strange places to visit and characters to interact with. Several binary choices through the story give you routes as you side with one faction or another (and the choices aren't obvious). You can get a little lost as what to do next as there is a degree of non-linearity to the game but a full conversation log is there to help you out.

It is really sad that after a few previews this game didn't get a lot of coverage so sales probably haven't been great but if you like adventure games and sci-fi and want a post apocalyptic scenario that isn't just in generic old America (or the west) give this a look. Pretty reasonably priced too IIRC (I backed it on strength of concept art and their previous games).

Finished off the other ending for the main game if Disaster Report 4 (this one a little less over the top than my first one ) and the epilogue DLC. They were a nice touch revisiting the city 5 months later to see how things had improved and to get in contact with characters who survived. A few minor puzzles thrown in and a few more resolutions that the mian game missed so overall a nice touch (even if they should have been in disc and not DLC (that I at least got for free). Worth the short playthrough after the main game.

Also grabbed a few more trophies with 92% on the main game and 100% for the DLC (93% for the overall entry for the game) I would need a full new playthrough to get the ones I missed though so that will do me.

Not sure what my next TV or PC game will be, perhaps Langrisser on console or something short on PC...

Really enjoyed this, probably more than I expected to. I loved XCOM EU & 2 so was initially wary but the changes they've made really focus the game, for the better in most cases. I hope that XCOM 3 is closer to the previous mainline entries, but I'd definitely buy a Chimera Squad sequel if it became a spinoff series. 9/10

I love me a good rhythm game, and this absolutely was not it. Piss easy Platinum but the game itself is really poor. Started Thumper again for my rhythm game fix.

Still on Yakuza 3 but also got Saints Row The Third on the go as well, oops.

And finished off the final boss in EDF 5 today on normal in co-op with my son (we play the campaigns in co-op for each EDF as our main game we play together) with me as a ranger and him as a wing diver. Got the DLC packs to play for the future too (and campaign with the 2 other classes) but I consider it "complete".

Fun reboot of the EDF story set in a different timeline than the previous games. The usual alien blasting madness and slight clunkiness but as fun as ever. Graphics have a slightly less cartoony look than 4.1 and there a bunch of new enemy types and bosses. Frame rate runs well enough with the odd bout of slowdown and screen filling limbs. The EDF song isn't as fun as in 4.1 though. The story is a little darker than the previous but still firnly B-Movie. Some improvements to weapon collecting (being able to keep a percentage of collected weapon boxes when you fail dependent on difficulty). A few missions were reasonably challenging, even on normal with fairly earned weapons. The localisation is a little clunkier than Xseed's as D3 localised it this time. Base campaign was 110 missions so bigger than 4.1 IIRC and 2 DLC packs available too. If you like 4 (or 2/3)this is a nice extension of the style and well worth playing. I hear Iron Rain is a bit more divisive (and made by a different team). Took ablut 40 hours and I think we got 22% trophies.

Getting a few things finished off here nicely so my numbers are slowly creeping up but still behind schedule. I think this is week 22? I need to play some shorter games. Might play Uncharted 4 on PS4 next as never did get around to it and feel like something a little more mainstream. Also remembered to go back on Steins;Gate Linear Bounded Phenogram so need to finish that off too.
