Bit early to be starting this thread, but Sony have just announced they’ll be staying away again:

If the holder of the biggest platform won’t even show on a new console year then surely E3’s days must be numbered now.

Tbh they'll be announcing the Ps5 probably by February if they follow the normal schedule and announce all the games confirmed for it. I don't think they need to wait for e3 to do that.

They're holding off on the big surprise reveal that the PS5 will smell like Gwyneth Paltrow's vagina.

"We're happy to announce that the PS5 will ship with the added bonus of smelling like Gwyneth Paltrows vagina. And on that note, we have some exciting news about COD exclusivity."

Yeah, doesn’t look good, Nintendo killed E3...

E3 is outdated anyway. It has been for the last ten years at least. It was only holding on because of inertia.

I love/hate the conferences, love the hype and some announcements / hate the fake whooping and hollering at every sentence and the endless dudebros gameplayless trailers.

There's no need for E3. Nintendo and Sony Direct style offerings are the best way of delivering updates.

There's also just too many games being released these days to bottle up all the announcements into a single week. If the game hasn't released within the next few months I'm usually distracted by another announcement.

My prediction is that Microsoft are going to announce a mobile console, given the success of the Switch.

    Xbox Series X
    Xbox Series M

The naming convention of their new console makes more sense this way.

I don't think they care about their naming conventions making sense.

I doubt we're getting a portable console from MS anytime soon. From their perspective, xCloud is supposed to fill that gap.

    @Derblington :lol: That's true.

The other day I saw a video of a handheld Dell were developing, which already runs PC games fairly well, and thought if they coupled the lightweight version of Windows that the Xbox uses with focused PC hardware, it'd be easy for Microsoft to launch something similar that ran games far more convincingly.

Then I started thinking about the name "Series" which usually implies variants of the same thing.

When I thought of the idea the other day it made perfect sense at the time, although I was a little drunk at the time.

Sony will be keeping schtum about PS5 until MS have announced how much they're charging for the series X.

Nah, they'll hold their own even to reveal it, like they did with the PS4. Rumoured to be next month on the 12th.

Yeah, PS4 reveal was also in Feb. IIRC, they didn't actually show the box til E3 though. Guess they'll just do a proper blowout at the event next month.

Besides price, gonna be really interesting to see what sony say on forward compatibility. As per the DF vid, the MS commitment to this (for first party) could see less impressive stuff. So sony could get a leg up there. On other hand, it was only for two years, and we havent had any major games announced that are next gen exclusive, right? And also, I expect the PS5 to be cheaper but also less powerful than the XSX, which could lower any differential.

In the end, two major takeaways of unknowns I have from the DF vid are the benefits of the SSDs in terms of asset streaming (and whether you can scale this down easily), and whether games will use CPU power for game breaking stuff if it is absent beyond faster FPS.

MS said first party games would run on the existing xbox ones but I wonder if they mean via xcloud streaming?

@Technoishmatt I think it should only be the first year of next gen.
Matt Booty said, “[a]s our content comes out over the next year, two years, all of our games, sort of like PC, will play up and down that family of devices,” in Nov last year. One year takes us up to Series X launch.

Used to love the conferences. They just descended into absolute cock waving with 'stats' though. About a third of them ended up being worth watching.

Wouldn’t that remove much of the need for people to upgrade.
