Iím old enough to remember C64 vs Speccy, Amiga vs Atari St & Megadrive vs SNES.

Been out the console loop for a while now being a PC gamer.

But out of interest with the new consoles on the horizon who in your opinion took the last round? Itís been hard personally to keep up due to the different console variations this time.

The Stadia trounced them both soundly. Xbox or ps4, LOL. Who plays those old timey consoles. GOOGLE'S where it's at.

Nintendo with the Switch, in my humble. It has a fantastic library of games. I havenít seen enough games, exclusive to the Xbox this generation, that warranted a purchase. The online, Gamepass, looks like cracking value for money. But it should be about the games.

The PS4 has more exclusives, than the Xbox One, that appealed to me. But if I am honest I have bought less games for it than previous PS consoles. And PS+ feels like terrible value compared to what Microsoft offer.

Both online content feels better than what the Switch offers, but for the games alone, it would be my console of choice.

Easy win for the Switch. My PS4 is good at playing Netflix though. And Amazon Prime!

Hah, I wasn't kidding, just did the 2019 wrap up thing and my most played was Red Dead Redemption 2 with 10 hours, a game where I barely got out of the tutorial area. Guess I have completely transitioned to PC now (and Switch obviously)

Damn. Guess there's not much point picking up a PS5.

Not sure that's what Sony will have wanted me to take from the 2019 wrapup, lol

Not sure it's really been as hard fought this time around. Sony won the sales game early and MS spent the rest of the cycle playing catch-up. I've not even sensed the same acrimony from the fanboys this time around. Remember back in the PS3/360 era when the comments under every Digital Foundry piece descended into screaming argy-bargy and accusing EG of being in the pockets of Sony or MS? You don't really seem to see that any more.

For me, my console use has fallen dramatically over the course of the generation. The PS4 still gets use for the odd exclusive, usually from a Japanese developer. The Switch gets occasional use when I go on my travels. But with almost everything coming to PC these days, that's where I do most of my gaming.

For the next generation, I'll almost certainly nab a PS5, but I really struggle to see myself buying a Scorpio. The use I've had from my XB1X has been negligible.

How do you see how much time you have spent on a PS4 game? I know the Switch gives vague indications, more than ten hours and so on. But I have never seen anything similar on PS4. Not that it should matter, but I am always curious as to how long I spent on a game.

Found a link, played 19 games, 639 hours in total, and 243 new trophies.

We are all winners, I played loads of great games, lots of late nights. Probably cost me a promotion or so over the cycle.

PS4 killed it for sales early on and never looked like losing a huge lead.

The XB1X though, for me, is the machine I'd rather play on and not just for the better gfx.

One of the features I like is the extent of backward compatibility, and the X enhancements on 360 games, as well as OG Xbox games. Halo, Splinter Cell, etc. That's decades of gaming right there.

The 1X is arguably the console the Xbone should have been from the beginning, but paired with an Elite controller, it feels like there's so much going on for the hardcore gamer.

Someone who plays nothing but Tetris, on a key chain that they won on a day trip to Skegness. It is a term that I hate. It is purposely vague, and only ever used by people that feel the need to reinforce their point.

PS4 comfortably but the switch is excellent. Due to the disparity in games available PS4 wins. Not a fan of the Xbox these days but games pass seems good value.

As switch is possibly my favourite console of all time (though had I been in my 30s with the ones or ps2 I may have enjoyed many many more games on those).

Ps4 had a good number of exclusives so I tended to play most multiplats on it as it is the one I upgraded to a pro with.

My xb1s has been a 4k bluray player mainly. Played a few games on it thanks to all that free game pass, which is definitely the best online value for money going.

Gamers won this gen. I legit feel that this has been the second golden age of gaming.

Its not been without it's problems, mainly gorging publishers lootboxes, and DLC. But just look at what we've had this gen.

Ah so they're into waggle controls, ergo the Wii.

I actually think it's been a pretty poor gen overall. Don't get me wrong, there's been some awesome games and there always will be.

At the same time though, the power gains have been used mostly on graphics and so we've seen minimal improvements in gameplay or experiences outside of the niche of VR.

Last gen open world was actually new and online games expanded rapidly in terms of scope, playercount and possibilities. We've just not had that this gen.

I'm hoping next gen we see a leap in physics and AI - the weak CPUs in the X1 and PS4 have really held us back.

I say that as mostly a PC gamer now but it still matters as most games are cross platform now.

I think it's been a great gen. Some bloody good games, especially those which aren't even graphic powerhouses.

At the top end of the industry Triple A loot box live service bullshit has been trying to destroy gaming but lower down the ladder the quality and quantity of titles has been immense

Itís been a very good time for the discerning gamer

Xbox 1 X and Game Pass for me personally, but PS4 and Switch overall. For work PC remains the lead platform.

Still ten minutes to go plus stoppage time in this one.

Too early to call a winner

PS now and Game Pass on pc kind of makes the pc winner?

I normally back the loser early on, have quite a track record going back to the Amstrad and only really got it right with the 360. I'm getting a PS5 so guess that will do bad next time round.
