I got dragged into an urgent meeting where I had to be suited (well, waist up) whilst on another call. Didn't realise camera was still on until halfway through changing. I was at the other end of the room though and think I got away with it....

Whats going to happen post-september? Will schools fall into scope of these regional lockdowns?

I think schools will probably the last thing to close by the sounds of it.

Have to assume so. Schools in Scotland and NI go back on Monday, so we'll have a few weeks to get some idea of what impact kids have on transmission and if other measures are needed.

Lockdown has given me a chance to have a separate WFH wardrobe. Decided tv/film/pop culture graphic tees weren't terribly professional for so many video calls so thought I's better buy some slightly smarter polos. I am firmly embracing middle age.
I wore an arsenal shirt on VC all day last Friday. Was ace.

I wore a Dead Kennedy's Nazi Punks Fuck Off t-shirt on two calls I was chairing today, but the camera was off.

I was in a conf call a few weeks ago where someone was wearing a ‘STAR WARS’ t-shirt and has changed their background to dagobah.

It made me chuckle all the way through at how proud he most have been of himself.

I love his confidence. Fair fucks.

We use Google Meet, so no background shenanigans yet.

I know this is to make a point about the US but I hadn't actually realised how bad we still have it compared to the rest of Europe.

I don't think the government particularly wants you to realise that either. Just go out and have a discounted meal. Those are just some numbers.

The stats for the last 14 days are odd. We have a comparatively low number of cases per 100k with other European countries, but our deaths per 100k is like 10 times higher (1.4 compared to 0.1/0.2 in Spain, France, Italy, Germany).

Wonder what that's about. NHS workers have finally lost their shit and gone on holiday for a few weeks.

Not just that but there is the drinking to excess, heart disease, diabetes and many other problems of which the UK is the bottom of the league tables in Europe. For some reason this tortured Isle does not look after itself particularly well.

A lot of places are showing a rise in cases so their deaths will start picking up soon. Our new cases have remained relatively high throughout.

This narrative that it's because everyone is fat is starting to take hold now and it's pretty disgusting. We got hit so bad because of the ineptitude of the initial response, something that we're still seeing the effects of now. I'm sure that will be completely brushed under the table soon though.

Sure the government made all kinds of mistakes, they shouldn't be let off the hook but the idea that people's general health is not involved seems as much a form of tunnel vision.

New Zealand is the third most obese nation of OECD countries, Canada, France and Germany aren’t very far behind.

    https://www.oecd.org/els/health-systems/Obesity-Update-2017.pdf

Obesity may increase risk but it’s a small factor in why numbers are so high here.

I thought the point being made there was that the government have cleverly positioned a scapegoat between them and taking responsibility for the situation going forward, whereby they’ll now refer to the general weight issues of the population as a more important factor to consider than their bumbling narcissistic incompetence.

Or maybe he just gives no fucks what his colleagues think and did it for his own amusement and enjoyment, and the amusement of others who really couldn’t give a fuck about stupid zoom meetings.

@Bambot I have no doubt the government are useless at many aspects of this but we can do absolute bugger all about that and one thing we as a populace can do is get healthier.

    We can, yes.

But the government are going to make it their new scapegoat. And that’s not right.

South Africa is fatter and blacker than the UK, and their deaths aren't even a quarter of the UK's.

The overwhelming, enormous reason for the UK (and the US) death rates is sheer, continued, incompetence and lack of fucks given by their governments

I'm accepting we may have factor's that increase our relative death rate but at this point this disparity with Europe is so huge it must be down to how cases are recorded surely? Maybe that PHE review will mean changes to recording?

Italy has been having single digit daily deaths for weeks/months and we are averaging 55 or so. It doesn't add up.
