But as someone else pointed out, the worst thing in the game is the fucking sticky purple goo which is thankfully used sparingly but is still firmly in "did you just fucking ignore all your playtest feedback because you liked the mechanic" territory.

I can pretty much forgive the platforming and the goo once it all comes together and clicks. I had to put it down for a while because it was just too fucking hard (I think I'm just too old to be playing shit like this on the hardest mode), but once you get everything going on with the weapon switching, the punching, chainsawing brutality and all the powerups, it becomes the game it was always meant to be and it's fucking awesome. Better than 2016 awesome.

Takes it's sweet time getting there and I find it absolutely exhausting to play for anything more than an hour or so, but yeah, it's worthy.

@Dirtbox Yeah I agree, I was a bit down on it at first but now I've got things figured out I'm definitely loving it. The platforming bits still feel a bit annoying and tacked on but the fights are just brilliant. Will definitely revisit on NM.

On that note, I find it questionable that it's even possible to beat some parts on NM with first play through, I had to turn it down for a little while, then go back and redo them once I'd got some more weapons. But returning fully stacked won't be as big of an issue.

I agree with all this. Just finished today at lunch and I'm absolutely exhausted by that bastard last boss fight.

Had to stop, I've always been inept at platformers, both 2D and three dimensional ones and this drove me nuts. The rage was real. Doom 2016 is a gaming highlight for me so having so many platform bits here is a shame for my brain. Lots of technical problems, too, mostly involving the buggy HDR implementation and the game shitting the bed when some settings and screen resolution are changed. Lashings of input latency compered to 2016 n'all.

There isn't much of that later on, or at least it's not really all that necessary other than adding some verticality to fights.

And that last boss is a complete sponge. I hated it.

I'm pretty sure some bits of the last level aren't doable without a BFG shot on Nightmare, they were tough enough on UV.

And yeah when it comes together it's amazeballs, they just drag it back down from its highs a tad too often.

Yeahhhhhh, that last boss. Kinda hated it with a passion and sucked the joy out of the combat tbh.

Doom 16 had a fucking awesome power up that meant BFG ammo just dropped about the place making later levels more doable. I wish they had that in Eternal.

    @Duffking

Agree with your summary of the Marauder. I've only fought one so far and I'm actively not looking forward to fighting another. I'm sure I'll get past it, but it won't be fun. Which is a shame.

Oh no. I missed a slayer gate in mission 2. I thought I could go back in and carry on exploring to find the key, seems I have to replay the whole thing to find it?

I just went back to get the same key I think. Yes you have to redo the level.

EDIT: I beat the Slayer gate and forgot to pick up the key 🙃

Does it make me weird that I don't actually mind the platforming in this?

I actually like the platforming. Some of it's pretty creative and I love the feel of the movement. Possibly a mouse + keyboard thing? I can see a couple of the jumps being more annoying on a controller.

I'm on a controller and it's fine so far. I'm actually enjoying fps platforming. Adds something different to the chaos.

Not being funny, but the thought of trying to play this on anything other than an easy difficulty with a controller gives me the sweats. More power to ya.

I jump from various platforms using the default controllers. I found 2016 easier to play on a 360 pad than mouse and keyboard. by default I started Eternal on 360 pad, it's bloody horrible. Fortunately, aside from initially getting used to the rhythm of keyboard presses during the shooting and melee actions it definitely plays naturally on mouse and keyboard.

I've started HMP for my first playthrough and it's been fine so far. Took a while to get the flow with, grenades, melee, jump, shoot and swap weapons. Once that clicks its like second nature.

Biggest problems I had with the platforming in the long run was first when you find yourself in a situation where it doesn't auto grab the wall after a dash, so you hit the grab button but it doesn't work so you punch the wall instead then fall. And second that sometimes the massive distance you can cover from a wall jump means that it's not all that clear where the next place to go is sometimes which really sucks when you're on a time limit.

Thank fuck the swimming was only in one level though.

@Duffking Oh yeah, the swimming is utterly terrible. No defending that. As you say, it's just lucky that there's so little of it.

I've not had the problem with inability to grab onto walls/ledges. Maybe I've just been lucky.

PSA - the Archville acts as a totem pole.

As someone else said, of all the fucking tutorials in the game (that you'll probably realise with no prompt if you've played a shooter in the last 25 years) THIS is the mechanic they don't explain.

Just lost seven lives on Taras Nabad as they throw you into a massive arena with loads of demons and an Archville you can't see.

But... the Archville always summoned enemies... right from its first appearance in Doom 2.

He buffs them and I don't like the classic Doom games so it's news to me.

Gonna hazard a guess that there's plenty of people playing this game that have never played/cared for the originals.

Oh goody, swimming with wonky controls in acid.

There's bits of this game that are 11/10 and other bits that are 4/10.

Of the many complaints I had about the game, the swimming wasn't one of them. It's seems fairly straightforward, did I miss something?

No, just a fleeting opportunity for a clutching at straws whine.

It's a fun fact for me, but something about this forum makes me typo or miss a word. I think it's the ambiance of the place, but fuck me if an edit stamp isn't my signature here.
