Well, I'm an hour in and surprised to say I'm not yet fully convinced. The environments look spectacular, of course. The soundtrack is as good as ever. It's dishes out the enemy types and weapons quickly and the challenge feels noticeably higher than the last game so far.

On the other hand I'm finding it weird how fucking scarce the ammo is (playing on UV difficulty) from the start, I guess they're trying to promote chainsaw use but I am constantly running out of ammo fighting something I don't have enough chainsaw juice to kill. Hopefully that will improve as I get more upgrades. Limiting you to 16 shotgun rounds feels weirdly stingy with how many enemies are present right from the start and how early you have a full auto shotgun.

Additionally, it feels a tiny bit buggy for me so far. I've already had enemies not drop any health when glory killed a couple of times, I've had a hell knight just... not be glory killable while down and flashing, and I've also witnessed enemies just move at 1 billion mph across gaps instead of playing jump animations.

It also feels really videogamey. Which I guess they were going for, but it's quite jarring. it leans a little too far on the "this is a video game combat arena" versus looking like a cohesive location at times. Like there was a struggle between the level design blockout and the world art team and the world art team lost. It's a bit cartoony and the story is already baffling.

Hopefully it'll gel a bit more as I play more.

I assume the ammo is only scarce on the first playthrough, once you get a chainsaw to replay, you can just cut demons up for it, right?

@Dirtbox It's probably just a matter of adjusting, I get the feeling that they want you to use your chainsaw a lot more whereas I mostly used it as a "fuck it" panic button in the last game.

@Duffking let me know how you get on with the end battle of mission 3. It's painful the amount of high level demons Vs the amount of ammo you have.

One thing I forgot to mention in my prior post was that I'd just been through an area which had sticky floor and you couldn't jump or dodge which was a genuine "what the fuck are they thinking" moment.

I'm drop-dead tired, so not starting this properly until tomorrow, but fucking hell, the PC version is a technical powerhouse in terms of image quality and performance.

    @Rogueywon

Yeah looks the business. I've only had half an hour as I wanted to chill with Animal Crossing. Will also give it a proper whirl tomorrow night.

Iíve just played the start on PS4 Pro. Looks and moves great, though I had to tweak the aim sensitivity as it felt really odd on default. Weapon sound isnít punchy though, which is really weird.

Already dislike the story stuff and the on boarding in 2016 (which was genuinely brilliant) is leagues ahead of this one, itís actually pretty crap here: start-stop-start-stop between short gameplay sections and on-screen prompts, everything about it is super arcadey and the giant glowing pick-up and secret icons are super ugly. Itís a weird mix tonally and 2016 felt much more diegetic in the delivery of the game mechanics and world (from memory, at least).

It feels a bit like the arcade mode they added to 2016 became the default for this one. It's weird.

I'm finding the attempt at storytelling a bit of a guilty pleasure.

Only real issue so far is how little ammo guns hold and how ineffective the standard melee attack is.

I also forgot how fast this was in comparison to anything else. Need to seriously get my eye in.

Game is ok, seems a bit unfocused and I don't like the tutorials, it's all a bit of a mess but the game play is fine. I can't get HDR to work, it says display or monitor not supported or whatever, which is strange because every other game with HDR works ok! :/

Got to the space station, you see the doom guys face under his helmet which is a no-no and he apparently speaks later on, which is unforgivable, really.

Yeah the tutorials are just a no no. Seeing Sir doom is a no no. The story is a no no. Overall though I don't care as it's about the shooting shit, don't die and that's as great as ever. As soon as you get the super shotgun with meat hook all will be forgiven.

Doom 64 is a bit of a rough time. Between the headbob and lack of mouselook (not even +mlook in the console works, and yes, I know it's not "authentic") and the inclusion of all the fucking splashscreens Bethesda has, it's not exactly ideal.

Not having the best time with Eternal. It's okay, but I'm not into just being tossed into the game with none of the usual preamble, and the game stopping press this tutorialettes are shit, we're well past that kind of stuff these days.

...Fast? I can't stand how slow it is. It was an issue with the last game for me, too much lumbering about. It gives you some opportunities to line up some peachy murders, but overall, fast is the last adjective I'd throw at it.

Okay, I suppose it is fast if you ignore how zippy you were in every FPS up until about 15 years ago (maybe more?). The original doom was ludicrous speed compared to this.

I donít associate speed with the old DOOM games. These feels like theyíve merged DOOM with Quake Arena.

It makes the PS4 Pro pretty loud. Iíve finished the first level and itís really not grabbed me. The gameplay is fine but the level design, story, and arcade elements really donít sit with me.
