Registered 6 years agoQuick question - how many have played it on console or PC? As it seems alot of online noise is coming from some of the PC sweat lords. (Not a dig just wondering like.)
Especially in regards to the changes to DLC 1 and disdain for DLC 2.
DLC 2 - was ok but not by much either, like many of said ID have managed to drain the life out of the game. Hence the changes to DLC 1 which they've been selling as a stand alone.
Plus the end boss fight - dear God, an excercise in banality too.
I'd hope they use the ID Tech Engine for some other franchises and give DOOM a resting period.
Maybe an Ash vs The Evil Dead game? -

Registered 17 years agoHopefully they take a break from Doom and they have quickly missed it up again. 3 was the wrong way to take the series (playing a little now and its aged badly as it is) The prototype doom 4 was shit idea (apart from the glory kill system) Doom 2016 was excellent but DE was step in the wrong direction and the DLC was bad from lot of people's view -

Registered 18 years agoI'd agree with that except Doom 3 which I enjoyed for what it was - more a moody survival horror than an adrenaline shooter. I replayed Doom 3 last year and the atmosphere is spot on. -

Registered 16 years agoI quite liked Doom 3 at the time, but I don't think it's aged as well as the first two. Even now, I can go back to Doom and Doom 2 on pretty much any platform and despite the graphics, they still put a smile on my face. Doom 3 feels much more like a product of its time. -

Registered 17 years agoThe atmosphere of D3 is good but the game needs a real remaster eg improvements to the shotgun and bit of tidy up to controls and textures etc. Also environments are so boring its the same sort of thing throughout the Alpha and delta labs
I have no problem with more of "survival doom" (but its not really survival horror) but as RW said its much more like a product of its time and also agree D1 and D2 play better still despite the graphics -

Registered 8 years agoI just tired of the Doom 3's enemies always spawning behind you the umpteenth time. It got a bit tiresome after a while. Also the weapons especially the shotgun feel like pea shooters in terms of feedback. It's kind of sacrilege that a shotgun feels like it has the impact of a Nerf gun. -

Registered 14 years agoOK so I finished DLC 2, still think it was way better than 1. I didn't think the Boss was so bad, he was just a giant marauder really. I also liked Doom 3 though so pay no attention to me.

Registered 18 years agoI also really enjoyed D3, but it would've been better off transposed into a different franchise imo. Doom16 really captured what made the originals so good, whilst updating it for modern sensibilities. Felt like a proper sequel to me whereas D3 was a diversion. -

Registered 8 years agoAgainst my better judgement I've started a new playthrough of this after Returnal has put me in the mood for some frantic combat encounters. Plus the PS5 upgrade may have swayed me. Interested to find out if I'll gel with it better now that I'm coming at it from a Returnal mindset and accept the punishingly hard difficulty and multiple deaths that will ensue. I kept wanting this and Doom 2016 to be Doom 3 but I realise now it's a different kettle of eggs completely, even to 2016's incarnation. I think with my new appraisal of it, it'll go better.
Is it just me though, or does it look utter arse with HDR? I cannot for the life of me get the settings sorted so that it looks anything other than pish. -

Registered 16 years agoYeah, I did find it looked a bit radioactive.
This is also a game that would probably benefit from multiple playthroughs. There is so much shit dotted around the levels, 50% of my game time was spent in the fucking map screen. Im sure you would enjoy it more when you can just power through the levels without having to grind to a halt to check if youve missed anything every five seconds.
But, yeah, one run through was enough for me, so maybe not. -

Registered 8 years agoI've never had to fanny with the settings so much before this. It's nuts. I've got it looking okay(ish) now but I've still half a mind to turn it off when I'm playing.
Yes, I know what you mean, although I do quite enjoy the combat breaks for exploration, it does start to grate after a while.
I swore that one run would be my limit as well but as I say, a new approach and I'm hoping I'll click with it enough to try the DLC afterwards. I have blasted throught the first level so far and halfway through the second and I'm enjoying it but I know that will change with a certain axe wielding wanker later on. I do find myself wishing it was thrid person though, it seems better suited for the emphasis on movement and the peripheral awareness you need to succesfully get through it.

Registered 8 years agoThe DLC doesn't mess about does it. I'm towards the end of the 3rd mission of DLC 1 and there have been more than a few hair raising encounters. Nothing insurmountable (I'm playing on HMP) but enough to make me not want to do any difficutly higher up than this. It's nuts. Very much enjoying it however. I blasted through the main campaign without too many issues (considering my first playthrough on HMP had me using sentinel armour for the last two bosses - I got them both first time this time and didn't find either too bad) and I'm firmly in the "fucking love this game" camp now. The DLC has been brilliant so far, even considering the fact that I've fought two marauders at once, a buffed marauder, a fucking spirit possessed marauder etc etc - in fact my last slayer gate started with two arch viles and then proceeded to step up a notch from there .
But it's great. I'm in the mood for it and I'm in the zone. -

Registered 16 years agoPlayed around with this on PC over the weekend, with the new RT stuff. Performance is still great - in 4k/ultra/RT on, with no DLSS, the lowest I saw my framerate dip to was 71. Turn DLSS on and you can stay comfortably over 100 on an 11900/3090 combo. Looks very, very pretty as well. -

Registered 12 years ago@Rogueywon yeah it's absolutely gorgeous with RT ultra everything and no DLSS. I've actually started playing with HDR on as well, after endless tweaking - it's an incredible looking game and performance is still 100fps+ -
Finished DLC 1 last night, really surprisingly enjoyed it overall. Thought the final boss was going to be a massive PITA but wasn't too bad in the end. First level of DLC 2 was ridiculously good fun. Don't mind the new enemies I've met so far either as it mixes things up a bit more. That optional second escalation encounter was absolutely nuts however, twats everywhere.
I can kind of see why they went the way they did with the new enemies and... I like it. I'm using every single weapon, mod and ability in my arsenal in nearly every encounter, and I'm generally someone who finds a gun they like, and uses it for the entire game. None of that here. Every firefight is a puzzle.
