So it's been brought to my attention I'm a cunt.

That's fine. I'm aware of this. Tell me something I didn't know, etc.

My main problem with humanity (and can I just say at this point, it's mostly with the british public; kinda the opposite of the "you covet what you see everyday" thing that Hannibal said) isn't that they're cunts. It's that they invariably NEVER own that. The internet is about 80% pron, and just under 20% humans explaining why either they aren't a cunt, or why what they just did isn't cunty. (And near enough 100% of THAT is utter bullshit.)
Case in point: this virus shit. The amount of cunt being displayed has even taken me by surprise. But you try telling someone obviously being a cunt that they are indeed being a cunt. Go on. I can wait. Do come back and update us - assuming you make it back alive, given how on edge everyone is at the moment...

I did it again, didn't I. I put the point of the thread... after a consciousness stream (with too much cunt).

    Anyway.

This recent "you're a cunt" from another forumite reminded me there was a thread I was thinking of making. (Absolutely no hard feelings, you were completely correct.)
The point of this thread is: you got an old console laying about not being used? Well, what better time to bust that thing wide the hell open than when you're being forced to stay indoors? Right? If you're sort of technically minded and into games (surely a safe bet around here?) it can be both extremely satisfying and rewarding when you eventually, say, see a Neo Geo game running perfectly on a Vita.

Which isn't to say also: it might well drive you up the wall. A bit. Just a little.

And that's why I'm here! To both lead you towards doing something that'll probably result in voices telling you to kill your family (which, let's be honest, some of you are already considering anyway), while also helping you nail down why the fuck sneek isn't working on your motherfucking bastard Wii when everyone else managed it what the fuck can I even possibly be doing wrong FUCK THIS SHIT
    Ahaha. Ahem.
    But seriously. It's great fun.
    *Thousand yard stare*

I'm aware there's a retro thread, this isn't the same thing. By all means discuss how utterly awesome GBA Astroboy STILL is, but this thread is more "HOW THE FUCK DO I GET ASTROBOY WORKING ON A 3DS, YOU CUNT". (By all means, call me a cunt. You're more likely to get a response. See: this fucking thread, FFS.)

Some things I can help with:
    Wii
WiiU (though I'm early stages here)
    Vita
    3DS
Old Xboxen (been a while tho)

Some things I probably ain't much use with:
    360
    Anything Playstationy
    Switch (... Yet)

    Ask Spectral:
    PSP

Usual disclaimer: no links or discussions around piracy. Though if you really need direction towards the older stuff, there's an ORGanisation dedicated towards ARCHIVING... Stuff. Yes.

Or you know... Just keep talking about the virus.

It's debatable which is better for your mental state, tbh.

I did a great job of selling this, didn't I.

I've actually been meaning to dig the OG Xbox out. Mine is hard modded with a dual bios chip, etc. The thing probably hasn't been touched in the last decade. I have no idea what the current best dash, etc is or even if there has been any changes from when I did use it. Also do you know if there is an easy way of identifying the chip without opening the thing up?

So... Naturally the first question is on something I'm not only hazy on, but it's been years since I did anything with.

I will say though, you may need to open it up anyway. A few versions of the old Xbox have a leaky capacitor problem. Have you tried powering it up? If I were digging mine out I'd probably open it up anyway just to check that one hasn't leaked everywhere (that could be nasty - worst case scenario, of course).

I softmodded mine with the splinter cell save trick, so not a clue on the hard mod I'm afraid.

Check here for most of this discussion thus far:

Nope not powered it on in years. I think I'd rather not know for now tbh. I think it can just stay safely or not so safely hidden away. Can't be dealing with having to open it up atm. I remember doing it once to adjust the laser and it was a pain in the arse.

    Understandable.
There are better options if all you're after is an emulation box anyway. Though it was nice having the Xbox games themselves sitting on an HDD (I did the fuck around that was pairing a new HDD with the console), they'd probably look a bit shit on the tellies we all use now anyways?
  • Deleted user 23 March 2020 17:28:11
I didn't really have a use in mind tbh. More just, not touched this thing in years, might have a mess with it. I'll just leave it and do it at a better time. All the other consoles you mentioned I have soft modded myself in recent years (not the 360 or switch). As well as buying a freemcboot memory card and SATA HDD adapter for the PS2. The PSP is also a good, easy to mod system too.

Yeah... Sounds like you're in a similar place to me regarding the Xbox then! i.e. one still knocking about, but got plenty better options to consider the fuck around of even connecting it up. Fair enough.

Just noticed the edit. Didn't list psp as a) don't have one, and b) don't feel the need to with a haxxed vita. I'll... edit the OP! (That'll teach you.)

I don't know how to hack what is going on.

    Believe me, I've looked.

Honestly the best bet for proper help is just to point people to GBAtemp.

Depending on what you're looking for, finding stuff on gbatemp is sometimes not that helpful (especially if dealing with older stuff; if there isn't an up to date pinned guide or how-to, you'll maybe get a lot of conflicting info).

Got around to digging the Xbox out. Turned it on and it seems to work, although it boots and loads things more slowly than I remember. Opened it up and the capacitor wasn't leaking. However while it was open I removed it anyway. Afterwards other than having to reset the clock it was the same as before I opened it. So at the very least I haven't done some sort of horrific damage to it.

I have 2 PS3s. Keep meaning to mod one for the hell of it.
  • Deleted user 30 May 2020 06:26:43
I've never looked into PS3 or 360 modding. I'd be interested in how you get on. I wish I had a steady enough hand for soldering, but that just isn't happening. So these days if it can't be softmodded I tend not to bother. Not that I know if either still need any soldering tbh. Since I still use them I've always been on too high a FW version anyway. Only stuff I've done semi recently is Wii U, 3DS and Vita. I am currently googling around to see how easy it is to wipe a hard modded OG Xbox and reinstall a dash, make sure the chip has whatever the final BIOS was, etc.
