It really is a shit cunt of a year. I feel genuinely grateful that I haven't had to face any real hardship so far when so many people are suffering.

Even so, it was quite nice to have something to look forward to.

The sleeper will probably awaken, oooh I dunno, sometime in 2021.

He who controls the Covid, controls the box office.

    And henceforth.

In some pretty poor scifi I read long ago, unlikely timelines became so improbable they winked out of existence.

I'm not sure we'll make Brexit, could disappear up our own annus really fucking shittus long before then.

    UUGGGHHHH

Well if the studio was worried about Bond flopping, you can see why Dune was

Ah. I see the streaming news was covered in another thread.

Anyway I will be going to the Cinema for Dune, I think it will benefit from the screen/sound.

I was chatting with a friend about this movie, and one thing occurred to me.
I personally think the movie looks really really art house. It doesn't look mainstream at all to me. Summer blockbuster this is not.
Yet it clearly has a mainstream blockbuster budget. Do you think the movie is at odds with itself? Is it destined to failed by its own very nature? Is this gonna go over the head of the average cinema goer while spunking 165 million dollars up the wall. Or am I full of shit (again)?

If only we had 10 films like this ever year instead of all the money being spent on superhero films, sigh.

You are basically describing Blade Runner 2049, which was considered a box office failure. I think this will do better - that latest trailer could basically be a Star Wars film.

Tbh if we got 10 sci fi films like this every year we'd just be complaining that there were too many sci fi films.

Of course it's not going to be a mainstream blockbuster. It's Dune.

@Tomo Just watched (about half) the latest trailer, and yeah, I do think that trailer at least will pull a lot more people in.

I donít think Dune could be anything but a bit art house-y even with a mega budget and all that spectacular action its just such a dense and arcane story.

If you want to see the fun bits of Dune turned into a proper blockbuster that is literally what half of Star Wars was.

I bet a lot of people go to see it expecting Aquaman and Drax going to war and come out disappointed by a moody philosophical epic heavily influenced by Mohammadís journey into the desert but I donít mind too much if I get proper huge sci-fi like this to watch alongside the MCU template.

I think I need to watch the Lynch version again soon. One of my all time favourites.

If I didn't know already who the director was, it would have been an easy comparison to Blade Runner in a lot of aspects.

    Great ensemble cast.

How long is it gonna be?!?!

Two and a half hours. It only covers the first half of the first book, so will probably end with him riding the worm and being called Muaídib.

Edit: added spoiler tags though if you donít know the plot of Dune by now youíre about 50 years behind.

The trailer does a pretty good job on giving us a 'previously on Dune' precis.

Also while I love the Lynch version for the style, dear lord no does it get the story completely wrong. I get that slinky martial arts was difficult for a Western cast back then, but turning the Weirding Way into magic shouty boxes was awful, and changing the meaning of ďmy name is a killing wordĒ, which was literally the underscore of the first three books, is just missing the point completely. And then you have the Baron as an AIDS metaphor and Sting in a leather thong. Things you canít unsee.

Yeah, looks so fucking good. Cant wait. Also glad they ditched the weird attempt at prog rock that accompanied the previous trailer.

Foundation series adaptation also due out later this year, so hopefully a good time for decent sci-fi. Glad Amazon binned their attempts to do Bank's Culture series, though. No way that was going to be anything other than a let down.
