I think I probably said this earlier in the thread but that is indelibly Dune to me. I saw the movie well into double figures before I read the book, heard the audiobook, watched that SYFY mini series. Even reading most of the books hasnt erased that. For better or worse, thats what happens in Dune. Thats what the characters look like (im sure thats probably true for a lot of people, tbh).

Im hoping this is as good as it looks as it needs to literally rewrite my brain.

Yeah, it's understandable. It's like how the MCU is now the defacto view of everything Marvel.

I love the faded European/Russiian imperial granduer that the Lynch film has. Thatís the tone of Dune to me and this new trailer seems to capture a similar tired majesty

The only other thing against the Lynch movie is how insanely miscast it was. Aside from Jurgen Prochnow maybe. Paul is supposed to be a young boy out of his depth for the majority of the book and not "how do you do fellow kids" Kyle Maclachlan, Sean Young can't fucking act, and Patrick Stewart, while awesome, is no sword master and best warrior in the universe. And also STING.

Is the equivalent to Sting going to be Ed Sheran in a cyber thong?

Feyd has been trimmed from this movie, I think they just merged him into The Beast Rabban.

I guess that makes a certain sense and Batista is a more convincing warrior than either casting was in the original

They weren't miscast from a Lynch point of view, they were the best options from his pool. Could have been worse, Laura Dern as Paul would have been terrible.

Bloody hell. That trailer looks incredible.

Honestly hope it's the kind of film that blows me away in the same way films like Jurassic Park, Terminator 2 and The Matrix did when they came out.

Yeah saying what I did about Batista I donít think there is anything wrong with Lynchís film as a movie in its own right. Like I said, its one of my all time favourites.

And the production design... I dont know if it was exactly right for Dune but it does make me sad that it put him off larger scale projects like this.

The navigators, the ships, the music, the costumes, weapons, suits everything looked and sounded amazing. From a purely aesthetic point of view its one of the best looking sci-fi movies ever made.

Yeah, it's a terrific visual feast, and the soundtrack is absolutely on point. The biggest issue for me that it's a) pretty incomprehensible if you haven't read the books, and b) if you have read the books it strays pretty far from what it should have been. Not difficult to just judge it as a unique product of its time though.

It also gave us the first two Dune videogames, which were great.

    House Ordos or GTFO!

A whole genre from that game. Though Ordos had to be made up, they couldn't use the minor houses from the books, I think. They aren't in the Encyclopedia certainly, it goes straight from Orange Catholic Bible to Ornithopter.

The syfy series I think deserves a lot of love too, brilliant given the budget and tech available. Again some not entirely ideal casting, and sets, and effects, but you can see the passion for project throughout. Like B5 in that respect.

The only thing I'm worried about is that I see Poe, Aquaman, Drax, Thanos and MJ rather than their Dune characters at the moment. There's something to be said for getting good character actors rather than the biggest names.

They're in the list of houses in Dune Encyclopedia, but there's no details. Westwood just grabbed the name and made up the info.

If I was going to merge the two characters, I'd favour Feyd over Beast Rabban but Villeneuve obvs likes Batista and he's not really suited to playing a willowy Paul-alike.

I am afraid to say I think this looks a little bit bland now, but we'll see. Chalamet comes across as fucking wet, ho hum.

No Emperor or Fenring or any Lansraad shenanigans shown so far either. Or Navigators etc. Seems really pared back.

Beast Rabban makes sense for the focus given his involvement in the first half of the book as the governor of Arrakis, and itís only in the second half Feyd really takes front as the plans within plans with the Baron positioning him as the noble savior from Rabbanís cruelty. It could be theyíre saving Feyd for a potential sequel, but seems unlikely based on info so far. Iím guessing theyíre not going to get too deep into the lineage and the breeding program, as thatís where things probably get muddy for a lot of viewers/readers.

Mmm, and Fenring is problematic in that Herbert pretty much springs that he's Paul's only real threat to being the Kwisatz Haderach in the last ten pages and you're like, where the fuck did that come from?

Unless I'm misremembering. No-one's ever bothered to try to cram that in, have they, even the TV series?

I donít remember the TV series that well but yeah, the focus was always on Arrakis itself. Did it have the dinner party in the series? Thatís a pretty standout moment in the book but would be difficult to make engaging on screen. Lots of internal monologuing and exposition through subtlety.

No he doesn't make the series either (unless there is someone intended to be him in the palace scenes, but uncredited nonspeaker type thing if so). Where the series does go into detail it's more on the Fremen side.

Honestly I tried so hard to get into it. I was actually enjoying the world but I can't fucking stand the way it's written. I got to about halfway and just wanted to read something I was actually enjoying. That trailer is making me want to wade back in again though.
