It just looks so unpolished. Each system, even the animation looks like it works to the bare minimum. None of the footage excited me or made me want to play it, which is a shame.

Just wish they'd reduce the scope and focus on what made the series great. A game this size given the time Rockstar might take on a new GTA would likely be amazing. But they're churning them out every year with more and more bloat. The way they kept saying "a new feature for this year" said it all.

Used to rinse each game in the series to completion, but personally I might give this a miss for Watchdogs. At least they seem to doing something different and I'm loving the setting.

Surely they should aiming for something more now. Even putting in a decent animation system would make a big difference.

This is very much a cross gen title. I'm underwhelmed.

It’s not even that. It’s rinsing the last drops of relevance from this gen’s tech. Hope the CPU jump in the new generation encourages them to actually do something new.

AC is a franchise that could really do with them killing it for a couple of years and just reinventing the entire thing. Even when they shifted it to an RPG it had so much of the previous titles that it really didn’t feel any different to play, there was just more of it and it included level scaling, but they’ve entirely run out of narrative ideas to keep the time jumping/animus concept relevant at all. It’s still there, along with the assassins guild and the hidden blade, but it just doesn’t make sense or fit the game anymore.

If nothing else, just change the title and announce it with a load of marketing so that people are aware of it, then drop the assassin stuff (the animus, the eagle vision, the hidden blade, the leap of faith, etc.) and just make historical fiction across different eras, leaning into the things that make them stand out via relevant gameplay and animation to each title.

Just watched JORRAPTOR (YT) thoughts after 6 hours with Valhalla, it is only 11 minutes. He is my "goto" guy for AC Creed, I have no affiliation other than enjoying his AC content.
Worth a watch. He is generally pretty balanced.
Based on his playtime, he was happy but it does need some work.

Also ACG got several hours with the same part of the game. Liked it BUT that it is very much in the same vain of the previous games. He makes a very good point about the need for maybe changing the presentation.

The state of the animations and combat. Ragdolls bouncing all over the place, characters gliding over surfaces like air hockey pucks, dodgy hit detection.. None of the stuff I hated about Odyssey has been addressed.

I just think it needs another year in the oven, but they won’t do that because they need it out for commercial and business reasons.

I actually think odyssey looks better than this and I’m playing that on a base 2013 PS4.

Yeah, loads of YTers got to play the same 4 hour event. The general feeling seems to be that it’s Odyssey with a new color palette and more blood in the combat.
If you liked that game enough and fancy playing it again, here you go. If not it’s a skip. Nothing is really different about it.

    @Daeltaja
In fairness a few more months to address, (July, Aug and Sept at least?) and we don't know if the build is a month or so old.
How close to release do games go Gold?

As long as it's similar to Odyssey gameplay wise, i'm okay with it as long as we don't have quest bloat as we did in Odyssey.

What happened to Beyond Good & Evil 2? No interest in AC, Watch Dogs, Far Cry.. just give me BG&E2.

Oh wait I know why. Everyone wants to play the next iteration of a boring open world game where the main character has absolute zero personality. Fair play Ubisoft.

Let's be fair - Jade from BG&E barely had any personality; it was more great character design than actual character.

Though I'd take BG&E2 over any of the games they showed off in a heartbeat.

Ubisoft leaning so heavily on their main open world franchises is disappointing but not unexpected.

I burnt out on them so long ago (and therefore stopped playing them) that I think I could actually play one of them again. I’m actually leaning towards Far Cry 6 at the moment, although that could change. My interest in both Valhalla and WD Legion waned after yesterday’s showings somehow.

It looks to be similar, even visually.

I'm excited for this. A little bit shook they've pushed Legion back in to the same holiday release window. October-November always gets too busy!!

Ditto - I'm ready to 'go back' to a few of Ubi's franchises (last Far Cry I played was 3, last AC was Black Flag) but the appeal's not there for me; can't put my finger on what exactly it is though.

Yeah... pretty sure this is nonsense.

I get a lot of the criticisms aimed at Ubisoft games with open worlds, but the vast majority of them have had decent protoganists at least, in my opinion.

Of course Watch Dogs Legion by its very nature might be lacking in personality in its main characters... but then perhaps it deserves some credit in that respect for not being "boring", for trying something new and different.

The Easy Allies preview of WDL made it sound pretty good, and the near-future London looks great.

Having watched a few YTers previews of this and WD and if I had to pick one it would be WD.

In saying that I will be getting both as I am a fan of both series. I thought WD2 was a great game, never quite got the hate for it. I understand it was the protagonists in it, never really bothered me. The world was great to mess about in.

@DUFFMAN5 I don’t think it’s so much that WD2 received hate, but more that many people (like me) didn’t give it a chance. After the first WD I just lost all interest in Ubisoft open world games and especially wasn’t interested in a WD sequel at the time.

Huge Ubisoft sale on Xbox. Far Cry, AssCreed and Watchdogs have huge (90%) discounts. Far Cry 5 is a tenner.

Honestly mate, 2 is a great and FUN game, even if you found the original po-faced, I loved that as well to be fair. Also 2 had great multiplayer modes.

Both look pretty awful but if I was made to play one with the threat of death if I didn't then I'd pick Valhalla as it's Vikings. Somehow they've made Vikings seem dull and generic though.

I enjoyed WD 2 - thought da kidz were a bit too cool snd hip for me me - cos I'm just not. Multiplayer was great though - nothing quite like hacking a player and watch them tear up the street searching for me. London looks sooo London - as a Londoner this is going to be one surreal experience - especially Camden where I worked and socialised in.

As someone who's played a lot of Odyssey I can see Valhalla is very much another one of those games. If I have to be honest, I'm quite disappointed that this is what we're getting after an extra years development time. I saw footage where the main character was circle strafing around a wolf firing arrows into it and it just reminded me of the worst aspects of Odysseys combat all over again. I certainly hope this promise of high enemy diversity is true. Also interesting to hear the game has no side quests at all. Also female Eigor looks so bland and uninteresting, like an NPC from a previous game. Nothing like Kassandra. Would need to see how it all comes together when I actually play it but so far my hype level is pretty flat, the first time I've felt this way about an AC game in a long while.

Maybe the next "true gen" AC game will be different, but even if it is, I would only imagine tweaks to the formula.
