| I mostly just hang around on the forum. As I only play games on Xbone, I tend to pick up the news from TA or xbox wire these days. |

Registered 9 years agoI actually really like US Gamer. They've got a good team of people, refugees from 1up and that. And a great RPG podcast. -

And that's the issue I think EG has. They are so desperate to be taken seriously and games are art they get lost up their own arse when writing a review.
I mean, it took a while for film criticism to be accepted as a legitimate profession. Hell, there's still a bunch of people (not on here necessarily, just generally) who say "anyone can do this, just say whether it was good or not and put a number on the end". And games criticism is even further back than that. Games are for kids, therefore games journalism should be written for kids.

Registered 18 years agoI only really read Retro Gamer nowadays. It's a quality read though, pretty consistently containing interesting stuff I didn't know. Loads of great interviews too.
I'm slowly going through the back issues I picked up as part of a deal on the app though, and around mid-2006 the writing really took a nosedive, largely because they got John Sczepaniak to do a lot of staff writing and he was fucking terrible then - parts of it seem to be written from the perspective of thinking nobody would actually read it. Funnily enough there was an article or two by him recently and he's gotten much better!

Registered 9 years agoDisclaimer for what I said before: I don't mind if people want different things to me, as long as I can get my things somewhere. My favourite reviewer is probably John Walker, which probably tells you enough about the sort of games writing I enjoy. I miss his EG reviews, though he does still occasionally do things for RPS. -

Registered 9 years agoI used to really like Ellie's reviews, but then I was evidently looking for entertainment, not an actual "should I buy this or not". And some of their older investigative journalism type pieces were fascinating, like the one about gun manufacturers pseudo sponsorship of COD and battlefield.
I agree that generally the front page isn't as appealing as it used to be (to me/my demographic anyway) but there's still plenty of decent stuff on there. I always like Emma Kent's stuff -

I totally get what you're saying and I mostly agree, my gripe is more to do that I'm seeing less reviews focus on the objective of actually reviewing, which I will admit is bloody hard, and more about being a think piece in a completely different area.

Well, I don't know where that line is. The Guardian is (arguably) a respectable publication, are you saying that EG shouldn't be aiming for something like that?
I think there's a difference between a review with personality and review that says look at me I'm trying to get a job writing for the Guardian.

Writing is hard. That's why it's a profession. Writers *should* be trying to do the best they can, and if you're going to shit on them for anything, it shouldn't be that.
EDIT: The "you" in that rant is figurative, it's not directed at you personally Jambo. I non-figuratively love you.
Ahhh thanks for the love Mola. I really love you too. In a figuratively sexual way. -

Registered 12 years agoI still find EG's low opinion of Horizon Zero Dawn unfathomable and can only conclude that Guerrilla Games somehow offended them in the past. -

That was one of the only Horizon: Zero Dawn reviews that I actually agreed with. It certainly generated a spicy response, though.

It's time for my yearly post moaning about their constant, reckless and dare I say irresponsible use of 'p' when talking about resolutions. "It renders internally at 876p." No. It doesn't, because that it isn't a thing. -

Registered 13 years agoI hardly look at the front page these days. As Phattso says, things have moved on and it is not aimed at me anymore. I am not saying I want the old days of:
Graphics: 9/10
Gameplay: 6/10
Story: 7/10
Sound: 1/10
But I would like some more info on how the game actually plays etc. I have genuinely walked away from several EG reviews lately where I could not figure out how the game actually plays.
I still love the forum though, it keeps me going through the working day. And as cunty as people are it is genuinely a lovely place at time, with some great support threads and really shows itself well when the charity threads arise. -

Registered 10 years agoI won't approve of Eurogamer until they have a print edition. Like Amstrad Extra did. -
It's not a bad old place. I've been here in one form or another since the beginning and I've spoken to tonnes of really nice and knowledgeable folk.
I've enjoyed the front page articles, the reviews, the YouTube stuff (Chiodini's Kitchen and the Dark Souls playthrough are recent highlights) and can honestly say I've received "good service" from this site over the years and made some good friends.
Due to life and all that, I ended up having quite a break from Eurogamer, only returning as a regular forumite in the last few months. I had previously been aware that the site was on its last legs, particularly the forum, but I was a little surprised at just how different it has all become.
I don't think it'll be around much longer. I'll have to find a way of tracking some of you down when we inevitably move on. -

Registered 16 years agoThe front page articles are good if you're interested in what book Christian Donlan has been reading this week, less so if you were hoping for more than a passing reference to video games. -

Registered 18 years agoI think EG lost its personality several years ago now. The writers aren't as good as they used to be in general imo. Oli and Donlan have been the best for a long while, and no one has really reached their standards.
Similar story over at RPS but I think they've done a slightly better job at maintaining their style through the writers they've picked up. But then I think its easier for them as they are essentially creating a collective blog whereas EG is a different beast.
Really don't get the hype around DF. It's just incredibly anal people frothing over numbers going slightly up or down in a really boring way. I think there are better tech analysis sites anyway. That said, they seem to have built up a lot of good will with the manufacturers and readers alike, so they do get some good exclusives.
