Excellent, thanks ssuellid. How much of this is going to be held in central london anyway? As I understand it the olympic village is going to be in Stratford, I guess Wimbledon will get the tennis and the athletics will be there, but surely the rowing and so on will be more up the estuary? Must be honest I dont know alot about the bid/venues but I really think its a good thing - Euro 96 bought the best feelgood feeling I've ever had. Those naysayers in London - its 7 years away, gives you alot of time to seek new careers if you are that worried about it. |

Registered 15 years agoNot being able to organise anything? Hmm Euro96 seemed to go without a hitch. Live8 regardless of your feelings was put together in a stupidly short period of time. We managed to put on an Olympics three years after WW2. -

Registered 15 years agoI think 90% if not more of people on both sides of the Channel only do it as a long standing joke. Its hardly surprising given that less than a hundred years ago the two of us pretty much ruled the world. Its no different to the north/south rivalry.
We both see each other as arrogant and meddlesome, hate each others cuisine and both think we still rule the world. Same but different. -

One thing in particular caught my eye.
"On Monday, the government said an extra £271m was needed for security guards."
It got me thinking. The Olympics are on for 4 weeks, so let's be generous and say that with prep and training, you need to hire these guys for three months. That's 12 weeks.
Let's say they earn a £150 a day. On a 5 day week, that's £750/week, so for 12 weeks that's £9k per guard.
If we hire 1000 extra guards, then the addition cost would be £9m.
Go crazy - hire 2000 guards. That's now £18m.
To spend 271m on 2000 guards, you'd need to be paying them £2,250 a day!
And they wonder why people are fed up with the Olympics already. -

Registered 14 years agoChrist that's ugly, mostly due to the logo. I still can't quite believe that is the actual true logo. I keep thinking that at some point, I guess the opening ceremony at the latest, they'll say "OK, that was just a bit of a laugh. Fooled you. Here's the real logo." -

Registered 12 years agoI was at Athens 2004 - trust me, every event loses it's appeal after about 20 minutes. Even at the Athletics where there are loads of different disciplines, there's alot of waiting around where nothing happens. And even when it does, you're never really sure of how "important" it is e.g. is this the final javelin throw for gold etc etc...
I just enjoyed the atmosphere of the city and the lovely weather - 2 things which London might be lacking in. -

Registered 11 years agoManaged to get tickets for the men's football semi final at Wembley, pretty happy with that. I'm hoping a lot of people will sell their tickets for the gold medal match once Team GB get knocked out. -
