Super Paper Mario on the Wii had platforming elements. I noticed a bit of platforming in the trailer for Origami King too which reminded me of Super Paper Mario.
What Tonka says. They are very far removed from a Mario platform games. They are narrative driven, very puzzle orientated, and the combat is a mix of RPG and timed button presses. They work very well.
I like the art style of the Paper Mario games and really enjoyed 1000 Year Door but have enjoyed the Mario & Luigi games more. -

Registered 9 years ago@PazJohnMitch There are still a few platform elements, but they aren’t really the basis of the series. There is more emphasis on turn based combat, collecting etc. I haven’t played one since sticker star. I have Colour Splash on the pile of shame still. -

Registered 14 years agoI have played most of them and think with the exception of TYD the M&L games are superior.
And Origami King‘s trailer reminded me of Super Paper Mario more than any of the others. -

Registered 19 years agoYeah, I got strong Super Paper Mario vibes from the trailer too and I remember being so disappointed with that game.
The first two were gold, I don't know why they've insisted on messing with the formula so much since then. -

Registered 18 years ago@ghearoid Shit. One thing I really liked about TTYD was the combat. Everything from turnbased, to the timing attacks, and the audience were brilliant.
I guess I'll better hold off on this one until the reviews are out. There's only the tiniest bit from the combat and it doesn't reveal too much. -

Registered 9 years ago@Tonka It took me while to click with the combat in TTYD. Timed attacks aren’t something I have the skills for generally. I may be in the minority but I really loved SPM on the Wii.
So caught up the general excitement I am finally giving Colour Splash the time it deserves. I am loving the simplicity, the art direction. But it lacks a challenge thus far. Hopefully it starts to offer something. Origami needs to be challenging in some way as well. I know it will be primarily aimed at young ‘uns. But I want something that doesn’t just feel like I am going through the motions.

Absolutely love the look of this. Exactly the kind of cheery game we need at the moment and the antithesis of Last of Us 2.

Registered 19 years agoI watched the Treehouse presentation last night and thought it looked amazing visually, but I'm not convinced by the gameplay. Oh, at all.
I'm going to wait for reviews then see in a few weeks if people enjoy it enough to finish it. I'm still wary since my disappointment with Super Paper Mario on the Wii. -

Registered 16 years agoYeah I was really disappointed by that treehouse presentation. The battle system really doesn't appeal to me at all. Shame as the game looks lovely. -

I wish more dev would create art styles rather than going for realism. -
Yep im not raving about it myself. Im getting the physical version though, so i'll give it a whirl and see what i think. Can flog it on easy enough if its not my cup of tea. -

Registered 18 years agoThank you for the Curry’s discount heads up EG as the £40 discounted price broke me on ordering.
Was already leaning over the fence to purchase just waiting for reviews to break but the wife loves the look of it and wants to play it too so....
Happy wife, happy gaming life...so preordered... if nothing else hoping for some vacuous but funny and charming gaming fun! -

Registered 10 years agoThere definitely is a Paper Mario cycle.
Announcement -> Hope it’s like TTYD -> see footage that shows less RPG gameplay -> Hope that the secret RPG sauce hasn’t been shown yet -> buy game and be disappointed -> wait for 3-4 years -> repeat
Nintendo doesn’t give a fuck how much you loved TTYD, they don’t want to make a Mario RPG, simple as that. -

Some light hearted fun is exactly what I look forward to at the moment! -
Reasonable reviews from my point of view, though its average score of 8/10 seems inflated in comparison to the critical points raised in reviews. Not a must buy or play game but it looks perfectly decent. -
I'm seeing negative points raised about the battle system but that's coming from adults - I'm getting this for my nephew (8) so hope it's just ok and fun for him. -

Registered 15 years ago@pacrifice I’ve seen comments saying the battles are pretty difficult so not sure how an 8 year old will get on. -
It does have an age 7 rating.... I guess I'll be playing with him if he gets stuck. -

Is bizarre though, I've gone from being certain I would buy it if it was in anyway a bit heavier on the rpg mechanics than the last few now I'm a weak maybe. I haven't bought a single one since ttyd. I'm sure there are loads of others like me out there. It's baffling.

I buy almost every proper* mario game and most spin offs
*as I've always maintained, not owning a wii u i was still able to maintain this record because as we all know they didn't release a proper mainline mario for that system.
