I'm seeing negative points raised about the battle system but that's coming from adults - I'm getting this for my nephew (8) so hope it's just ok and fun for him.
I’ve got this for my boy who is also 8. Hoping he gets on ok with it. He’s very excited!

The negative points surrounding the battles seems to be that they are ultimately pointless, not that the battles are bad.

My physical copy has just arrived with lovely folding origami sheets. I love thousand year door but viva la difference. Three hours of play later tonight I reckon.

^^ What's the beef Addy and Jono? :D

I'm bloody loving the first 30 minutes. It's all making me smile – particularly the writing.

Sounds perfect for my 8yo (and I can enjoy the humour). Once he's done Luigi's Mansion 3 this is next on the list.

So far, very enjoyable. There was a motion control bit within the first two minutes but to my relief, these can be turned off! Thank fuck.

@Humperfunk I quite like the little motion bits. Can't really fault the game so far

Haha yeah they aren't game breaking by any means, just that I personally have no patience for motion controls at all. See also having to shake your controller when your light gets faulty in The Last of Us, takes me out of the game completely and much worse than in this.

The humour is great and presentation is spot on. But I’ve only just got to Toad Town and I’m already sighing when I get to battles. I’m not going to find them fun at all when they start getting remotely challenging, I’m just so shit at puzzles like that.

The battles I am mostly OK with so far, I definitely think I'll find them more tedious as the game goes on considering as there is no XP, it doesn't seem worth it really but so far, so good.

Just defeated the second boss at the red streamer, so far both of those have been an excellent change of pace. I'm really enjoying the collection part of the game, i.e. discovering the hidden Toads in each area etc, great stuff.

‘Turn’ based battles with no XP sounds so ridiculous I can’t believe it. If you are going to force people into long protracted battles, there has to be a benefit to going through with them.

@Graxlar_v3 yeah absolutely. You get money from them, but I've been able to buy everything and have well over 10k left over! On the plus side, no grinding so unless you need money, can avoid as much as possible. Does seem like another missed opportunity though.

Bugger. Died for the first time. It's not very forgiving when you screw up the puzzle and then your stomping boots break :D

Perhaps I should have thrown cash at the Toads…

So what's the general concensus of folk who've played Origami King? Worth picking up at some point?
  • Deleted user 21 July 2020 13:30:41
I think its great so far.

Yeah it's charming enough to forgive the occasionally frustrating battles. My 6-y-o is really enjoying it.

I'm making a lot of progress and would definitely recommend it. Really hope it keeps this up as I'm finding it an absolute joy to play.

I want to reiterate here - easily the closest paper mario there has been to TYD. Really superb fun, great humour and lot to do for completionists.

Yep, agree 100% with this. I'm having such a blast that at the moment it could be a personal Game of the Year contender. Think I'm probably approaching the 20 hour mark.
