I'd forgotten about the assessment screen at the end of each campaign. The little money animation in the bottom right corner was a nice memory :)

Blimey, Nod difficulty ramps up from around mission 9 onwards, doesn't it? Though setting the game speed down from normal to moderate helped a lot.

I'm still struggling on Nod 4.

I read a review that mentioned it's hard to see a unit's colour with the updated graphics, and the older blocky graphics made the units and their colour pop a lot more. Has anyone found this a problem?

It's a shame the original cutscene video footage was lost because the resolution and resulting video quality was bad, even for the time. It would have been glorious to finally see the cutscenes with some clarity at 1080p or better. The stories behind Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert were actually great, and the cutscenes that told it gave the games a huge dose of personality.

@Zerobob No problems at all in C&C. Olive vs Grey is still very easy to distinguish. Not tried Red Alert yet, so can't speak for that.

GDI 11 and 12 are still rock hard. In 12, I had to really nurse my very tiny number of tanks, run home, repair, go out again. Even had to flog the weapons factory in the end to keep some cash in hand for repairs...

Huh? Tbe original DOS game ran at a 320x200 resolution. The FMV ran full screen at that resolution and was comparable to any other CD release of the time.

The PC wasn't really a FMV powerhouse at the time. I'm pretty sure video quality was higher on the PS1.

I'm on Nod 12 now. Actually seems to be getting a touch easier. The mid-game missions were pretty nasty, as GDI's tech at that tier outclasses anything Nod gets. But since I got flame tanks and stealth tanks, it's felt much fairer.

    It was.
It wasnít until a year later with the release of the 3DFX Voodoo cards that the graphics arms race started on the PC

That's the Nod campaign done. Definitely gets easier once you get the better tech in the last couple of missions. GDI next.

@X201 even after 3D accelerators blew up, the PC was still behind consoles on the FMV department. I remember the opening cutscene in Soul Reaver was scanlined, presumably because otherwise it wouldn't fit on a single disc. The PS1 had dedicated hardware for videos, the PC took a while to catch up.

    @Rogueywon

I went with Nod first too.

What does that say about us?

I know, I only said it started the race.
I remember how brilliant but bad the FMV in Ripper was

@challenge_hanukkah The baddies always have the more entertaining stories in C&C games.

It's funny, though, just how mid-90s the writing in this feels. A game from the days when people read Tom Clancy unironically.

I see they've left in that one unit that just ignores you when you try and send a group to move or attack. Really enjoying it though.

Theyíve also left in the annoyance of enemies emerging from the buildings the commando blows up and instantly attacking, making a couple of missions heavily luck based. They fixed that for Red Alert and Tanya.

Yeah, they've left in a lot of the faults of the originals. This is absolutely a remaster, not a remake. The work they've done on the remastering is spectacular, but C&C in particular has some rough edges as a game. I've particularly been annoyed by the need to hunt down every last enemy unit on some missions, particularly when you get some lone soldier stood behind a tree.

I've always thought of C&C as the first "modern" RTS (Dune 2 was a nice try, but the lack of drag-clicking to select units held it back). It's easy to forget, though, just how much subsequent entries in the genre like Warcraft 2, Total Annihilation and Starcraft polished things up.

It took me a little while to get over the fact that there wasn't an attack-move in this game! How the fuck did I ever complete this on the fucking Saturn with a controller...

@Rogueywon I was wondering why a mission wouldn't finish and I finally noticed the lone enemy soldier standing behind trees!

Another "idiosyncrasy" I've been reminded of is the pathfinding. My harvesters were going down a dead end route and taking twice as long to get back to base each time. Annoying when you're desperate for money and they're driving all over the map.

There's also the rogue loose canon unit that will mess the greatest of plans up single handedly. I was trying to get a group of tanks to go around the back of the enemy base without drawing attention. Everything looked fine so I went back to check on my base. When I hear shooting start I go back to see one tank has decided to drive right through the middle of the base taking shots as he goes. 5 minutes of trying to rescue the situation later and my tank group is obliterated and the enemy is launching a counter attack on my base.

I used to play the DOS version of Red Alert, but I thought FMVs in other games (Tomb Raider, for example) looked better and were far less blocky and pixellated. It was maybe due to a filter of some kind running over the top to soften the pixel edges and disguise the resolution somewhat.

That's C&C done - thoughts over in the Recently Completed thread. I'll move onto Red Alert soon, though that doesn't hold quite as much nostalgia value. I played Red Alert at the time, but never put the hours into it that I put into C&C - largely because some of the group I got together with to play C&C on LAN moved away shortly after Red Alert came out.

    @Rogueywon

Tried a couple of missions and really cant disagree with a single thing you said in the completed thread. While a good game it is really showing its age in the gameplay/mechanics side. Purists might that but personally too creaky.

Case in point in the second mission i had killed every unit on the tiny map and used my engineers to capture the few nod buildings but didnt complete, the stupid reason was because of the tiberium silo which i forgot about but was right next to the captured buildings. Sure not a problem but i can only imagine how frustrating that will be later on.

Decided after a few missions to refund it and play a more modern RTS. No idea which as i have loads unplayed but that is kind of the point. Why play an old game that has aged, when their plenty of newer experiences out there. Hmm maybe Deserts of Kharak or Ashes of the Singularity.

The whole exercise was worth it for the remastered soundtracks alone tbh.

Also, are there any good recent RTS's?

I pretty much can't find anything from the last few years, the genre truly has died out...

@StixxUK Very few. A combination of the near-impossibility of console porting and the rise of the MOBA all but killed the genre. Which is a pity, as MOBAs aren't exactly known for their engaging singleplayer campaigns.

I just want some base building, army building tech tree prioritising goodness!

I never played the StarCraft 2 expansions so maybe that should be my next stop...

    After C&C remastered that is!
