How do you make a game with a message about revenge being pointless and solely a catalyst for more hate without depicting the violence and revenge though? I don’t think that’s a medium maturity issue, it’s a limitation of the interactivity of the genre/medium. It’d be the same if it was the theme of a movie but the entertainment factor comes from watching the protagonist enacting their fruitless revenge for 90 minutes. Violence is a requirement for survival in the world, it’s how they live. It’s not really about that. The extremes of it, and the torture, sure. |

Registered 6 years agoTo be fair I think the lesson that Ellie learnt is that all of the killing brought her nothing where Lara in the Tomb Raider reboot is a reluctant killer in the cut-scenes and Rambo in the gameplay with no commentary to be made

Registered 9 years agoIt's not an issue that's specific to this game. But the game's Very Important Message about violence made it feel... disingenuous? I don't really know the word.
But it's a game that only ever gave me the option to express myself through violence, but was also trying to make me feel bad for the violence being done whenever I happened to walk into a room with chest-high walls. It's just a bit of a disconnect to me, that you don't get with games that are all "Hey, violence! Isn't this fun?", like your Dooms and whatnot.
I don't really know any game that manages to walk the tightrope completely. Maybe Undertale lol. Or other games that don't encourage getting into combat, like Death Stranding. Or games with no combat, like Disco Elysium. -

Registered 15 years agoSomething about the world of TLOU, particularly in 2, that I don't really gel with. The message I got from it was don't put your trust or love in anyone because someone will just take it from you. That you shouldn't care for anything because it's gonna die and you'll just get hurt and isn't that a bad thing? Seemed too pessimistic to me. Finished A Plague Tale last night and that setting is as grim as it can be but at least there's a hope and a motivation to push the player along, I didn't really get that from playing as Abby and especially Ellie (which I guess was informed by the fact that I saw Joel as a bad person at the end of TLOU1 anyway, which I believe is the directors intent, so going out to take revenge for him didn't really sit well, even if Abbys crew were bad people themselves)
I wouldnt be rushing to play TLOU3 let's put it that way.

Look! You're a monster for killing this pregnant lady and anybody else in the WLF! Scars are all horrible apart from the two you save, though, so don't even think about them...
I felt bad enough taking dogs out to begin with, but going back and playing fetch with poor Alice was a masterclass of making you feel like a bastard.
