So it's basically over right? Ghost of tsushima is out soon but that certainly isn't looking like a classic and cyberpunk is delayed until when next gen launches.

So what's your top three? Looking through my trophy list it is incredibly hard to pick just three! (REMASTERS NOT ALLOWED)

The Witcher 3 for its scope and depth, where practically every quest is interesting. A story that I cared about and the freedom to play how I wanted.

Titanfall 2 (probably switched for tlou2) for the perfect mix of sp campaign and multiplayer which pretty much no other game managed.

Bloodborne or maybe sekiro either one for their sheer brilliance that we are all used to from From software.

The last of us 2 is probably in there instead of Titanfall 2 but I need to replay it first to properly digest it's greatness. It's so close to perfect for me so will likely end up there.

Also honourable mention to the Outer Wilds for being the best indie game this gen and was so close to that top three. Magical game that let me do what I wanted and just explore and discover the story with no hand holding.

@Bichii Didn't we have one of these just the other week? My top 5 is probably set now, on the lines of:

    1) Persona 5 Royal
    2) The Witcher 3
    3) Total War: Warhammer/Warhammer 2
    4) Bloodborne
    5) BattleTech

Honourable mentions to Forza Horizon 4, Doom 2016, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, The Surge 2, Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Slay the Spire. I'm excluding straightforward remasters of last-gen games, or Dark Souls Remastered would be in there as well.

Edit: Also, does Alien: Isolation count as current-gen or last-gen? One of those awkward titles that doesn't fit neatly on either side.

    Life Is Strange
    Red Dead Redemption 2
The Last of Us Part 2

If LIS doesn’t count because it’s cross gen then Spider-Man goes in at 3 and the others slide up. Honourable mentions to Forza Horizon 4, Titanfall 2 and Inside.

    Dark Souls 3
    Witcher 3
XCOM 2 & War of the Chosen
    Red Dead Redemption 2
    Hollow Knight
    Slay the Spire

If pressed for one, it would be XCOM 2.

EDIT: I lie! I totally forgot about The Return of the Obra Dinn. Despite the retro graphics, that goes straight in at #1 as the most fun I’ve had playing a game in years.

Yeah breath of the wild was extremely close for me. Such a brilliant game, I just felt it lost it near the end.

The whole idea of "generations" is stupid marketing horseshit.

But Breath of the Wild, I guess.

@Mola_Ram I think there's more to the concept of "generations" than that. The nature of each generation's console hardware has a big impact on the games that are developed. Even on PC, where hardware works on the evolution-not-revolution basis, most developers have multi-platform in mind, so games end up shaped by console hardware specs. You do get the occasional outlier - Crysis launched on PC at the very start of the 360/PS3 generation with better visuals than any console title that generaiton would manage - but those are rare exceptions, not the norm.

So the 360/PS3 generation was in many respects defined by the shortage of RAM on those machines. Towards the end of that cycle, developers got used to working around that. But if you think back to the generation-defining titles of that generation, they were mostly corridor-shooters with spectacular set-pieces - demanding on the graphics hardware, but not particularly hard on RAM. With the advent of the PS4/XB1 generation, the open world game took over from the corridor shooter, as the greater available RAM allowed for more freedom to explore without loading screens or disruptive buffering.

Even further back, the PS1/N64 generation was defined by the move to 3D and the marketing-driven insistence of the platform owners that everything must be 3D even where 2D visuals would have worked better.

@Rogueywon It might have meant something once. But the only thing left is companies trying to drum up hype for rapidly diminishing "next-gen" returns.

Hell, now we have generations between generations, and Nintendo doing their own thing entirely. The concept now has very little relevance for me.

Still Borderlands 3 as it's the best game I've played in my life. Shame about how they keep messing up balance.

Breath of the Wild is the game that I have enjoyed the most so far. God of War would probably be second. Third place could change depending on my mood, though I really enjoyed SM:odyssey and Titanfall 2. Detroit would possibly take that last place. Though after completing it I never went back.

Looking back over my last few “of the year” lists so very few are wholly original to the PS4.

Remasters, cross-gen and reboot/remakes feature heavily

Looks like Witcher 3 is in the lead so far?

Bloodborne and Breath of the Wild not far behind

Game of the Generation seems to be a single player thing!

I have also loved CoD Warzone, Apex Legends and pubg (for a while) , but view them as a bit more 'disposable' entertainment. I think a sp campaign maybe gets you a bit more involved, so is easier to select.

    NieR Automata
    Bloodstained Ritual of the Night
    Operencia

The first 2 were no-brainers, being unexpected returns of games I had loved in previous gens. The 3rd one came as a surprise - it's just one that I took a risky punt on and which turned out to be exactly what I wanted; managing to engage and amuse me in a way most games fail to do anymore.

Singleplayer titles inevitably leave the strongest impact on me (ok, so co-op as well, maybe). The big problem with competitive multiplayer is... well... other people.

Should probably also have given honourable mentions to Nier Automata and Warhammer: Vermintide 2.

As it was released simultaneously on the Wii U and Switch is it allowed as a this gen only title? And it is my favourite game I have played this gen, but I did purchase it on both consoles.
