I hate to moan about the game, as all the moaners piss me off but..... do the Sunshine controls feel ‘off’ to anyone else? They feel very twitchy and hard to get precise position. I’m using a Pro Controller and a slow walk turns into a run with virtually no pressure. I’ve just had to turn the game off after trying to get the cage star in Ricco Harbour and it’s been a nightmare. I even booted up the GameCube version and did it on my 2nd attempt and then back to the Switch and not even close. I can live with the awful camera as that’s just a sign of the times but the controls really don’t feel right. |

Yeah I had a quick go at sunshine and they felt very twitchy to me too. Struggled with that more than Mario 64.

Registered 16 years agoI thought it was just me! When carefully walking slowly over an edge and dropping down to another, or jumping across a gap, he seems to take a couple more steps at full speed as if you had moved the stick hard. It's that transition from slow to fast without further input that's throwing me off and I'm not sure I'll ever get a feel for it.
It's not bad as such, just very not Mario like. I did play Sunshine a little on Gamecube and don't remember it being like that. -

Registered 6 years agoThanks for the validation 😊 Glad to hear it wasn’t just me.
I have an 8BitDo SN30 Pro+ pad that I may create a profile for just for Sunshine and see if I can take the edge off the twitchiness a little. -

I am no gaming expert but ive always found this quite easy. Slow it down a tad when cornering and you should never come off.

Are you hitting the gold star mid way through that sends you flying across cutting a portion of the course out?

This is amusing, my (6 year old) also shed a tear over this yesterday, which was actually quite shocking as he never cries.
It made my son cry yesterday.
Strangely enough I breezed through it, just lift off B on sharp corners and be very subtle with the controller (I have it attached to the grip) and it was done in about 1 minute so plenty of time to spare.
I found the early Candy Galaxy tricky though, took a few attempts at that. -

I've been dipping into all three particularly 64 and Galaxy I'm 54 stars into 64 and 46 into galaxy. The gaming tapas nature of star collecting lends itself well to this. I'm Finding both an absolute joy despite the age of 64. From a gameplay standpoint its every bit as fun as galaxy which makes dipping in and out of both much easier.

Registered 14 years agoI'm only about 20 stars into all 3 games at the mo but agree, they're different enough that when I've done a few in one i can hop over to another and it feels relatively fresh. Most of it is muscle memory at this point though Sunshine has moments I'd completely forgotten. -

I think I must have some sort of brain issue. Outside of narrative games I can and do forget almost everything beyond the broad brush stuff. It's kind of worrying but it does mean I can be suprised by something I've seen before! -

Registered 12 years agoI've been concentrating exclusively on Mario 64 so far, got about 30 something stars, but I've played through this initial section of 64 so many times, both back in the day and more recently on emulators.
Despite this, I've never managed to get all the stars in 64 and I said to myself this will probably be the last good opportunity to fully complete it, so I really want to do that before moving on... but Galaxy is calling and it looks great, plus I've never played it before. I might start dipping in and out of all 3 games now too. -

Registered 3 years ago@mikew1985 In hindsight there are certainly one or two levels that were really just motion-control gimmicks, like the surfing one. -

Registered 14 years agoSunshine is fun but so buggy and loose compared to almost every other mario title.
It's great to have a solid, 16:9 HD version as there are certainly some good moments in it. I've only picked up about 25ish shines but some of the challenges are so of a time (and bad). The eel teeth cleaning shine is so monotonous that you think, there is no way someone designed it this way on purpose but then you remember loads of games had crap, artificially long + frustrating challenges back in the early to mid 2000s. -

And some of them are even mildly interesting but the surfing one that you get to with the green star is just not fun. It's just a shoehorn for motion controls.

On the plus side I did the daredevil run for bouldergeist on my third try. I remember struggling with that with the stupid waggle spin. Button press is so much better.
