I think Odyssey is one of the weaker Mario's too, but to say it doesn't have any memorable music when the Steam Gardens theme exists is plain crazy.
If you put a gun to my head and asked me to sing the Steam Gardens theme I wouldn't last long. That was one of my least favourite levels from the game tbh. Only other theme I could properly remember is the first level with the T-rex.

The music in Odyssey was imo great but, I guess it was generally less hum-worthy than past titles. But people also say that about BotW and that has one of the greatest soundtracks ever.

Best thing in Odyssey was the Donkey Kong tribute in New Donk City.

The best thing in Odyssey is how it doesn't bin you out of the level when you get a moon.

That alone makes it the best Mario game.

The other best thing was turning into the fork and/or the woodpecker bird thing.

Odyssey was excellent but once I found all the obvious moons I kind of lost the impetus to find the rest, because it just involved a huge amount of fruitless running back and forth.

Odyssey is the best Mario since SMW for me (never thought I'd say that after adoring SMG1/2).

Felt a lot like BOTW in some ways; dropped you in a level and let you get as much or as little out of it as you wanted with direction from the designers at a bare minimum. The amount of secrets in each level is staggering; some were a bit shit but most of them I found quite inventive and fun to find. They knocked it out of the park with the visuals and audio. Mario's never controlled better either.

Broodals were dogshit though, as was the boss rush at the end.

Odyssey was mostly fantastic, it's just that the whole package didn't feel quite as consistent as the likes of Galaxy and 3D World. There were far too many moons, iirc a few of the captures were more annoying than fun, and the whole thing about having to grind coins to get 999 moons felt disappointingly cheap for a Mario game.

But the highs were amazing - the DK level was just incredible, and it was very rewarding exploring the levels and hunting out all the moons and cool secret stages. It was like a pick and mix type game, I think I just got very burnt out on it by the end (my fault for going for 100% completion I guess).

Heh yep, in hindsight this is quite annoying. In Mario 64 I'd probably complete most of the levels in about 10 minutes if it didn't kick me out every time.

Agreed, no idea why they didn't stop at the 'regular' moons; no joy at all grinding for coins.

Yeah I really enjoyed my time with odyssey but the sheer amount of moons put me off the post credit game
.ironically I would have prob spent more time collecting and getting 350 moons instead of stopping at 250 because there is no way I'm going for 999

You only need 500 moons to unlock the final level, though.

Edit: But yeah, if you've got a completist mindset having that amount of moons is off-putting.

Getting the gold sail in Odyssey is completing it by getting every unique moon. Not getting to 999 which doesn’t do anything or mean anything. The number is around 884 I think and you get the gold sail. No coin grinding.

True, but iirc you got a pic or something for getting 999. Besides, 884 on the sail just looks weird - they should have settled on a nice round number for all the unique moons.

Patch being released 7th nov which will give the option to invert camera across all three games.

Really could have done with that before I played sunshine lol

Picked this up a couple of days ago.

Were the controls in Sunshine anyways this shit? I have fond memories of it in the Gamecube but Mario controls like his shoes are covered in butter whilst being given electric shocks. And that's before I have to start fighting the camera at the same time!

64 and Galaxy are great though.

I played 64 for the first time through this collection. Absolute classic.

I will never play it again and I will never recommend it to anyone, ever.

@Duffking You are allowed to recommend it until March 31st 2021. After that, you risk your Switch refusing to work.

I have played a fair bit of Mario 64 over the years and beaten it a few times including the first time round on the N64. For the first time I got all 120 stars and I am very proud of myself.

It's OK I wouldn't recommend it even to my greatest enemy.
