I actually really fancy playing sunshine again but those basic little tweaks should be in there a a minimum.

Does anyone know what is in the Day 1 patch? Other than ‘fixed some issues’?

64 feels really sluggish, not sure whether that’s how it’s always been or if there’s some input lag. Sunshine feels more responsive but both really could have done with being in 60fps, it’s a bit jarring coming from more recent Mario games.

Well I'm 23 stars into 64 and I still think its exceptional. The bite sized star challenges are as accessible and addictive as anything before or since and mario is great to control. The hub castle is still a genius piece of design too. I concede the camera Is shit though. I distinctly remember exclaiming "Fuck me" out loud at least twice as I wrestled to get it to point in the direction I was trying to jump in. It's not constantly irritating but when it is it's very frustrating.

How does saving work in 64? Do I need to complete an area to save progress?

@monkman76 pretty sure you get a chance to save your progress when you grab a star (including when you get the extra star for collecting 100 coins in a world).

Restarting from your save will still reset your lives counter to the default 3 though. So I wouldn't bother accumulating lives.

Galaxy still an absolute pleasure to play and looks as good as Odyssey.

Hmmm I'm tempted to wait playing my copy. I reckon this is a bit of a rush due to corona and we may get some patches. Nothing major but some may come

Yeah, I'm tempted to get it just for Galaxy. The other two would just be a nice bonus. Although I don't like the idea of using the touch screen for the pointer stuff, but tbh I'd argue that the game is best played on a big screen anyway.

If you play SMG with a Pro controller, what happens with waggle/pointing.

It uses gyro, from what I've read. Although you can play it with detached joy cons to replicate the original Wii controls.

I remember Nintendo Life saying the two joy cons or with a pro pad was great but trying to play it on a lite was a bit of a ball ache as you have to use touch screen to collect the star bits.

They mapped the jump to Y button though to avoid the wrist flick, so it sounds passable all ways but I think playing without
the screen in your hands is best.

Played both today and I prefer gyro with pro to touch screen, along with prettier visuals obviously.

Got 20 stars on Super Mario 64 after putting it on for "a quick go". Plays like a dream, albeit with Mario's weird turning circle that I don't remember him having.

They’re removed “so long, gay Bowser” when you hurl him into a bomb.

Does the camera just keep rotating for anyone on Sunshine? Let the lad have a quick go before bed on his lite and it just keeps rotating round at a distance.

@the_milkybar_kid No not had anything like that. It occasionally gets stuck but that’s about it.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I was pretty sure before I started, I'd bounce right off it after all these years as i often do with many older games but 64 is just so much fun to play. They really did nail it at the first attempt.

I've started with Mario 64 and thoughts so far, I'd forgotten how bloody annoying the camera is. It's constantly drifting towards "the way forward" even if you're walking along a narrow walkway. It does help give the game a more playful feel that I appreciate, but I don't know how I used to manage on my N64 pad. The camera aside, the rest plays extremely well.

I really wish the image filled the full height of the screen though, without borders top and bottom. I guess Nintendo thought this would muddy the pixels, but an option would be nice.

Played a couple of hrs of 64 (probably equal if not a little more than I ever played on the n64 - mario kart and zelda were my sink holes as a kid). Only got about 10 or so stars. The camera is fucking wank for sure. The turning circle is hank and he jumps far too long after pressing the jump button a have found myself falling at the same point time and again as I jump too late.

All that said, I'm enjoying it. But compared to recent entries (which I know isn't quite fair) it really doesnt do well.

I'm sure I will get used to the timing and the turning circle jankyness. But the camera, why couldnt they properly give proper camera control to the right stick? (No need to answer that one!)

Had a quick go on mario 64 and galaxy.

    My assessment so far....

Mario 64 better than the rom I played on the pi. I dont have access to a laptop/pc or the inclination to start messing with emulations etc.

    So.....

Mario 64 is the best I've ever played it. Smashed 6 stars in no time all the muscle memory kicking in. The camera and the movement all fine as it's what i am so used to from back in 96. By today's standards and if you're new to 64 then you may find it jarring. it looks sharp and I think anything more just wouldnt work unless completly reworked under the odyssey engine. The lack of widescreen didnt even bother me after 5 min.

Galaxy......still as wondrous as I remember, such a charming game and the minor flourishes it has received make it even better. Doesnt look that far off odyssey to be Fair. Wasnt even that fussed using my finger for the little gems every now and then.

Yes I would have liked q bit more love on the extras etc but based on what I have here I'm easily going to complete all three games. At 42 quid it's a bargain on playtime alone.

The real missed opportunity with this is Sunshine. It’s the long forgotten 3D Mario game and the one most badly in need of some attention. A few fixes and a bit of love and they could have elevated it to an extremely high level. It could have felt like a new game, and would have been worthy of a full price release. After all this time to just shove it out in widescreen is really poor.
