There's always a big dispute about whether Nintendo is for kids, and I was thinking about it and came across describing Nintendo in this aspect like McDonalds. Now, McDonalds is like any other fast food company, like Burger King or KFC. But, it has been said that McDonalds aims specifically for children. It has the mascot - Ronald McDonald It has the playgrounds It has the Happy Meals with the fast food toys. And yet adults enjy eating there too. Sort of like Nintendo, eh? |
Nintendo like McDonalds?

A rise in Haiwaiian shirt and the popularity of musicals perhaps?

Nope
Ninty is for fanbois and decerning gamers.
Sony is for the 2 year old chav in a burberry buggy.
Every console has their fanboys... stope being so negative. I love Nintendo for all it's worth, but I'm not a fanboy. -

Registered 18 years agoMcDonalds is mass market, whereas Nintendo haven't been for a long time. McDonalds frequently try to change their image to make themselves more appealing to the consumer (e.g. the recent salad menu addition), and in order to make more money. Nintendo are not like that.
Maybe in the early nineties the comparison could have been made, but not now. -

I was actually say taht you could compare the whole new, healthier (and not working) image of McDonalds tohow Nintendo seems to be trying to mature its image with a sleeker and sharper console design and games like Possession appearing on the Revolution. -

Registered 17 years agoI would actually say the PSP is a Supercar and that the DS is a family model.
hrug: Anyway, that's getting off topic.
EDIT: And decerning doesn't show up in dictionary.com

Registered 17 years agoI don't think the PSP is the Batmobile as the PSP is slowed down by load times and not very durable. The Batmobile is as fast as hell and at least the Tumbler version is also as durable.
And what do you mean about the DS being like Penelope's car?

Trust me it's The Batmobile
"Chicks dig the car"
DS although I'm loath to pidgeon hole it to just be a girly machine......it's shaping up that way.
OMG, that is pure crap. Yes, I've seen the PSP and it is not the Batmobile. They may think it looks sexy, but then again, the Batmobile is not sexy. Have you seen the Tumbler? The Batmobile is a tough, durable, speed demon machine. A 'sexy' PSP is not.
And the DS is not a girl machine.
The PSP wowed me for a while, being smaller than I thought, and with those clear L+R buttons, but isn't all that. It's a game machine after all.

It may be sexy, but its not all about what a machine looks like. Thats the worst thing with the gaming industry in this country, style over substance. Not saying the PSP has no substance but it blatently has lots of faults or things that could have been better, but people dont care because it looks good.
Retailers are in business to make money, but when independant retailers recomend products on their looks no wonder the charts are a depressing read.
-- EDIT --
In fact its not sytle over substance, its marketing hype over reality.

Registered 17 years agoIn your store is not the world. Just because in your store more girls buy the DS than men, doesn't make it a fully girl machine.
And if chicks 'dig the PSP', why isn't it being bought mostly by them. Also, please explain all of the things in your lists and what makes them like their respective consoles.
You're biased because you base your results on one thing (your shop) and don't take into account the rest (the whole gaming world).

Registered 18 years agoI own both, and recently its been the PSP in my pocket on the way to work.
I wouldnt say the DS is a "girls" machine. I would say a lot of girls may not be interested in the PSP though.
If machine A had a 50-50 split of male and female owners, and machine B had a 90-10 split of male and female owners that wouldnt make machine A a girls machine, it would suggest however that girls dont like machine B.
Your store doesnt appear to be an accurate representation of the averge though does it, what with your PSP preorders being 35 times more than the DS. -

Registered 17 years agoFirst of all, do not bring sexuality (heterosexual and homosexual) into this. Saying the DS is bought by girls and gay boys is implying that gay men are like girls, which I can tell you is not immeditaely true. And many people have different ideas on what it is to be gay, so it's all in opinion.
Secondly, 'sexy' does not mean 'digged' by girls. I'd say 'sexy' means 'digged' by men.
Thirdly, how can you say that your store is a representitive of the whole world. What if more girl gamers go to your store than men? Does that automatically mean that there are more female gamers than men? To work out who buys what you need to look at sale charts etc.

I do. My store.
What would you say would be a good sample amount of units sold to judge who a console is sold to?
As already said, your store is not a representitive of the whole world, you even admitted it when Halo 2 didn't sell well. I think that when you find some facts and figures based off research done into who buy what console on the world's scale, than we can properly argue. -
k.o.t.i wrote:
So how would you do a micro study then?
A micro study? All I know is that you can easily finds out sale figures via surveys etc.
I think finding sales figures for the UK would be easiest.
