The default auto run is weird to me too, I also turned it off. I can only assume the devs have seen enough from players over the years to determine that running all the time is what players do anyway, particularly speed runners. Seems like the choice is made with those in mind. Had fun playing last night. I do wonder how someone would manage playing 2 and not 1. I think the majority of the discussion on the game will be how it differs from the first game and in addition it seems more punishing even on world 1 alone that I can see first time players having some difficulty with. |

Registered 17 years agoI dont know if my Spelunky muscle memory has atrophied or if this one is genuinely harder but it is really kicking my ass. I dont even notice the Jungle traps half the time.
Thankfully, I have the shortcut open so its time to grind that for practice. -

Registered 13 years agoSo I think I finally completed the first section. Then some woman said something about a short cut... i then started a new level and died instantly and it sent me back to the beginning.
How do I get this shortcut then? -

Registered 13 years agoI think you have to give her 3 items before the shortcut is completed and it'll be over in the left area of the starting hub thing.
Yea I'm dying a lot to the moles and stupid deaths but am having a great time.
It does feel a bit harder than the first game but that could just be my mindset is stuck making the descions I would have made in teh first game. -

Registered 16 years agoI'm loving it so far. Feels like a natural evolution of the first game. Managed to beat 2-4 and then wasn't at all prepared for the next stage and died promptly.
Hoping to get even further next time, but wow... it's tough! -

Registered 20 years agoHoo. So many more things to watch out for in Spelunky 2! Have managed to get to Olmec stage a few times and only passed it once...and then there was more levels (in which I died).
This game is gonna take a while! -

Registered 17 years agoHas anyone watched the GiantBomb quick look for this? Is it safe to watch for people trying to avoid "spoilers" (if there is such a thing for a Spelunky)? I'm waiting for the PC version and am trying to avoid seeing anything past the first couple of areas. -

Registered 15 years ago@KRadiation As someone mentioned earlier you have to give her a few items first before the shortcut opens in the starting area when you start the game. It perhaps isn't as beneficial as you think because to get a successful run you really do need the opportunities given to you in earlier levels to get those additional items or health etc. Think for many shortcuts act as something of a practice area where you can quickly get to later worlds and figure out what to expect for your proper run -

Registered 16 years agoAttempting to unlock the final shortcut is doing my head in. The first demand is pretty easy but to say that the next is an exercise in frustration is a huge understatement!
I don't know how long I can persevere without losing my mind!
Edit: finally did it! Such a relief!

Registered 17 years agoHow have you found the rest of the game, difficulty-wise? It definitely looks harder from small amount of video coverage I've allowed myself to watch.
Also, have they fixed the netcode issues? It looked completely unplayable from some of the GiantBomb stuff I've watched. -

Registered 16 years ago@christourlord It's definitely a lot tougher than the first one, at least at first. As with the original, the more you play, the more you learn, the better you get.
It has only been the aforementioned third shortcut requirements that have caused me any major trouble.
Still definitely worth buying for Spelunky fans. It's absolutely stuffed with items and secrets and plays just as well as the previous game.
I haven't tried online play, so can't comment on that, but single player and local co-op is a very smooth and hitch-free experience. -

Registered 17 years agoOnly one more day to wait for the PC version! I have spoiled more of the game for myself by watching daily runs than I was hoping to, but nothing beyond the second & third areas.
I guess they have removed online co-op altogether from the PC version for now, which is a shame. Sounds like cross-play is coming though, which will be great if it works smoothly. It would be great to be sherpa'd through the first couple of areas by a more experienced PS4 player

Registered 16 years ago@elhozzo Thank you. Yes, I did ask but the update with the fix arrived before I got an answer, so my post was redundant.
I have all shortcuts unlocked now..gif)
Love the game, although the original now feels like a walk in the park by comparison! -

Registered 18 years agoFuck me this game is hard. I wasn't great at the first, but this is absolutely kicking my arse. Played for over an hour and still not got beyond 1-2... Admittedly, I could prob speed run beyond there, but I'm trying to get money for interesting items.
I forgot how annoying the whip can be, especially whipping whilst jumping. It's so precise. The amount of times I've jumped into a bat or snake thinking it's an easy kill is doing my nut in. -

Registered 17 years agoThere's just so much stuff to keep track of now. It's like 10% more than the first game on paper, but it's enough to add ton of cognitive load and to make the price for messing up much more punishing.
I love it, but it's really exhausting to play!
I've made it to Olmec a few times, but just like most runs in the original I get overexcited and die stupidly. -

Registered 18 years agoNever thought I'd say it, but I'm thinking of doing Steam refund. I'm not sure I've got the patience for it anymore
That said, I discovered and persisted with Rain World this year and it's one of the best, but most punishing, games I've ever played. Took me about ten hours with that before I was fluid.
Trouble with Spelunky is I'd much rather be playing it handheld such as Vita/Switch. -

Ah rats.
Part of me is glad I never fully dived into the original (made it to Olmec a few times but that's about it); came to the party late so didn't rinse it as much as BoI, Rogue Legacy and the like.
I guess Hades will have to keep me busy for now.
