Figured it's worthy (one hopes) of its own thread!

Reviews out tomorrow before the game releases Friday.

Can't wait, as a fan of all three games, and everything I've seen of this hasn't lessened my excitement.

Except perhaps the return of the racing level, even though it won't be quite the same now!

I bought the trilogy a few months back. Never got around to playing through II and III again, bought it mainly for the definitive edition of the first game.

Just checked the trilogy again on PS4 and the first game isnít up for pre-load yet, despite the fact itís out tomorrow - anyone got an idea when pre-loads normally go up?

I hope the goons make the same high-pitched squeals when you shoot themÖ

Have they mentioned whether they've updated the mechanics? The shooting mechanics in particular were clunky as fuck even for the time it was released.

    @Decks

It's more or less built from the ground up (using the Mafia 3 engine as a base) so all the gameplay mechanics have been overhauled.

The Mafia 3 thing is an issue for some people though in terms of what they've seen of the gunplay in preview vids, as arguably it looks pretty similar (and not everyone cared for the shooting in 3, or wants what might be similar and thus a bit less realistic in this).

It is now based off Mafia III engine, so should be good.

Can't speak for PS4, but the pre-load only went up on Xbox yesterday, which going off previous experience is really quite late given the release date. I'm sure it'll show up on PlayStation soon.

Looking forward to it myself, the original is genuinely one of my all time favourite games and I haven't played it for eons, so hoping this will feel quite fresh.

Interested to see how this turns out. I absolutely loved the original, but not sure how much is rose-tinted glasses as it must be almost 20 years since I played it.

Had a cheapo steering wheel at the time for F1GP and driving round a fully realised city with that was amazing back then.

Genuine inquiry - you're tempted by this but were quite strongly against playing old games in the PS5 thread. Mafia is the same game with an engine uplift. All the MS BC stuff adds in 4K, better frame rates, and HDR. Sounds similar ish.

So where's the line in the sand between "I don't wanna play old stuff" and "I wanna play old stuff in new clothes"? Is it textures? Engine?

Anyways - I too am very intrigued by this and really REALLY loved the original Mafia back in the day.

Once you're using a new engine and building from the ground up it becomes a new game, really. all they've kept is the story.

I wonder if they've added a load of open world faff or just kept it very lean and linear.

That's a technicality for me - if it's the same set of missions, the same characters, the same world... it's a shiny, less clunky, version of the same game. Same with Demon's Souls. Same with TLoU Remastered. etc. etc.

I don't consider that a bad thing - I like playing older games, and remasters definitely make them easier to enjoy.

Itís not a technicality for most though.
Thereís a big difference in playing an old game as-is but upres vs an old game rebuilt and remastered to feel new despite using the same narrative and mission structure.

You're asking why I would be interested in playing a game with greatly improved graphics and controls?

    @StarchildHypocrethes

Absolutely the latter, you'll be glad to hear/read.

There's a free roam mode, and collectibles (cigarette cards and magazine covers). But that's nothing new, think the aforementioned has been there in varying guises since Mafia 2.

If I recall originally the race was a proper pain in the arse. If they've fixed that, then I'm more than happy with this ha.

I don't bother much with remasters but if an old game I loved is rebuilt from the ground up that's different.
I never played the original Mafia so this would be like a new game to me.

    Postie delivers.

Day one patch of 7.2GB ugh. I'll fire around for a few hours pre-patch I suppose once the install is done.
(a total install of 154GB for the console trilogy buyers, before patches, across the 3 discs btw)

Wonder if they've kept all the traffic violation stuff in. I remember starting to get sick of being pulled over for running red lights and shit.

That's all adjustable in-game now, I believe. There only if you want it to be.

No need for sarcasm, it truly was a genuine question. You've presumably played and enjoyed the game when it first launched, you professed to not like playing old games. But you're happy to revisit in a new engine.

I have this image in my head of all EGers who've been here for the better part of two decades all having kinda similar love of the old stuff. Was jarring to realise we don't, I promise I'm not stalking you around the forum. :)

Wasn't really trying to be sarcastic, just seemed an odd question when a few posts up I'd asked if the mechanics had been updated as it would be clunky as fuck if not.

    30 mins....still installing.

Looking through the options, aside from the usual, yep, you can adjust police response and car handling between regular and simulation (reg. Cops only chase upon kills, sim. Cops will chase a vehicle collision etc).

Also a "skip unecessary trips" option to bypass the driving filler.

Oh ! It's finished ! Here we go.

Framerate seems solid on base PS4. Pretty much like Mafia 3.

The racing wasn't that bad, took about 3 goes to figure out to go really, really slow, because car had downforce 0.0000000001 whateverthingsdownforceismeasuredin. iirc.

Can confirm: the infamous race is still the infamous race.

3 attempts, tyres flying, drifting madness, crazy wreckfests. Brillant.

Wasn't sure on the "easy win" icons in dealing with the opening pursuit, but I suppose it's an easier intro than the old cheese the AI into pillars/parked cars of yore. Love the fact the detail is still in place (shooting out the tyres of yellow car at motel before entering) and the whole general atmosphere and look is great.

Bit of mixed bag graphically, gameplay seems relatively fine, but the tearing in cutscenes is ridiculous with camera pans. Had a few disappearing cars in the streets, some texture bugs but nowt major. Enjoying it all regardless.
