I spent a few weeks saying "hush you ponce" after all of his posts at one point. It really got to him after a while. -

Registered 8 years agoI do get wistful about vizzini sometimes as he just seemed to be compelled to have the wrongest takes possible across a broad spectrum of topics.
He would derail so many otherwise interesting and useful threads though with his shittery though, so having him back wouldn't do the forum any favours. -

As others have added, 'if that wasn't obvious' - witness the spam filled pages that we struggle to keep down on a daily basis.

Don’t think being snarky is very helpful. Respect goes both ways and while people should be empathetic to the staff who clearly have more pressing issues, a bit of clear communication back to a engaged, active and loyal community would go a long way.
It's been raised more than a few times. With EGX Digital recently and with the state of things it hasn't been a priority - if that wasn't obvious.
Basically, expect spam filled pages between the hours of midnight and 8am for the foreseeable.
This is actually the first direct message from a mod or admin I’ve seen personally. Lots of hearsay and bits repeated from Discord but if there was an ‘official’ explanation is must be buried in a thread somewhere.
Can’t understand why there isn’t just a sticky message at the top of the forum or something. It’s just basic communication and transparency.
It's pretty much a case of emptying the stinky bins every other time we log on. Not particularly moaning about it, though we have certainly spoken to staff in an unvarnished manner. We're at our whits end, so don't expect things to get better without official support.
The feedback has been that we can't expect investment (even man hours presumably) on this for the foreseeable.
Thinking pragmatically, with the pandemic and resources presumably at an all time low due to the evisceration of any events revenue (my presumptive), they're not going to prioritize around a load of mouthy gits in the creaky old forum are they. It says a lot that Rupert got his exit from selling everything to an *events business*. At the same time, I can't assume even 2021 will bring things back to normal in a healthy way.
I will say that the editorial team have been supportive internally and do seem to care about how things appear, but I'm also sure they wouldn't want to have lost so many colleagues to redundancies across the Gamer Network as a whole over the last 6 months - referencing recent public RPS exits here specifically.
It's a shit situation for all concerned.

Registered 5 years agoIf it helps escalate things to the powers that be you could point out that it could very easily flatline their own SEO rankings to go to absolute shit if they keep it on for much longer. It's not simply a matter of "meh, it's the forum" from that angle.

Registered 16 years agoAs many have said we are all willing to help out. If it's just a case of 'emptying the bins' then surely a volunteer group of regular EGers is the answer in the short term? -

True, but as the profiles are on the main domain and they use the thread titles for the hits and not the body text, that's probably crawled too.

Thing is, the mod tools aren't exactly complex since GDPR worries removed a load of stuff, messaging for instance. The emptying bins buttons are next to the nukes, not just for the forum but for the rest of the community stuff as well. So modding more people has its risks.
To be honest, I have asked if the forum is planned for demolition as frankly I'm not up for pissing around with spammers if it's in an intentional death spiral. I've been told fairly emphatically by different staffers that this isn't the case.
My personal opinion is that there's a tech debt that hasn't been resourced for a long time, and now with the pandemic to deal with and a business model with a reliance on events, I doubt we feature on any to do lists. This is entirely my honest view though, it's not as if the mods are in the loop. -

Registered 9 years agoIn all seriousness, something like a 10 day ban on new accounts creating threads would at least make the spammers job a bit harder. Maybe even mandate some posts in existing threads before allowing new ones to be created- although that could lead to spammy/junk posts to get around the restriction.
We'd have to do away with the "start a new thread to introduce yourself" thing for new accounts though. I do enjoy watching each and every one of those descend into absolute farce... -

Registered 9 years ago@ZuluHero He may be right, we all remember classic WWF quite easily. WWE, classic matches is far harder. Who remembers a decrepit Undertaker being beaten by the gimp Paul Heyman has been trying to big up for fucking aeons, yet is as boring as fuck? The twat couldn’t make it in UFC. -
