    Sounds like a cool guy.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction. I've been trying for ages to set up a new thread about a new cash app I'm developing which I think can really help, but every time I start one it keeps disappearing soon after. I keep trying to set it back up and the same thing happens again?

Definitely up for using the app, but I'm having a few problems and can't find support for it anywhere. Could you make a new thread to advise?

Stupid question but what is the point of all this spam? What does it actually achieve for the spammer/s? I've never understood the actual purpose of flooding a forum (for example) with posts that make no sense. Is there a way to financially benefit from doing this or is it an example of just maliciousness for the sake of it?

I've no idea either. The only thing I can think of is that someone unwittingly rings the number and it's peak rate charges or something. Surely there's got to be more to it than that though, otherwise they might as well get a paper round.

If anyone is on Chrome, you can get an extension that injects custom javascript into a page. There's probably the same for other browsers but not looked.

If you use this snippet it will hide any posts with no replies.

Obviously this means you will miss any brand new threads but it does hide the spam.

I suspect it'd be followed up by phishing. I.e. someone calls one of the fake numbers and they'll go something like 'yes madam/sir, in order to proceed we need some personal information as well as the billing details for your software' etc.

Used to be alleged Microsoft technicians called people directly themselves with that sort of crap (maybe they still do) so I reckon it's something similar.

When we get spam threads that include a link to a website (not just a phone number), chances are the spammer's goal is to get the thread indexed by Google before it's been deleted/hidden by mods. These are "backlinks", and they used to be a core principle of SEO, both for legit organisations and dodgy spammers. If they can get their sites indexed enough times, the website (or maybe the phone number) is more likely to appear in Google search results and they benefit from the boost in traffic- which might be for nefarious ends, or might be a genuine effort to get more visitors- albeit one achieved by paying dodgy spammers.

Edit- I'm not an expert and some or all of this could be a total swing and miss- it's just based on stuff I used to do a few years ago at work

@hedben2013 You're right about the SEO part but no way it's for legit purposes. It doesn't make sense, why would a company want to/need to resort to this sort of thing to promote their support numbers?

It's someone trying to ensure the fake support numbers show up before the real ones in Google in order to scam people who call those fake numbers.
