Exactly. Every English person I know was rooting for Wales in the Euros, and Iím sure itíd be the same if it was Scotland too.

Heís just trying to stir up hatred and cause tension - donít let him.

Yeah get rid of him. He basically serves no purpose on this site but to ooze and sweat.

I am gutted. You can't help but dream. It's been such a refreshing tournament. No pressure, entitledness, or expectation. They achieved so much during a world cup where the gap has narrowed between average teams and the usual winners.

I really hope this focus on positivity sticks around. Let's dump all of the unhelpful 66 comparisons along with being crap at shoot outs or having a floppy keeper. You dont see other teams carrying around these ghosts and distractions. Be the masters of your own fate instead.

It's felt reminiscent to 2012 for me. Fresh, relatable players who are likeable and aren't there because of the money. They are there because they have passion and are enjoying it. They want to achieve and seemed to want to do it for the country.

Mixture of pride, inspiration, anxiety that it carries on, disappointment and relief that the coming home bollocks can fuck off for a while.

Saw two lads having a scrap on my way home from watching at the pub. United we stand, divided we fall...

The England players donated all their earnings to charity. This is the kind of England team and manager to get behind.

You're right. England players have been doing it for over a decade. Mbape got lots of press recently for doing the same as its obviously still rare.

Caught the last train home from Bristol. Absolutely full of very drunk, but very subdued England supporters. Fair play, at least they weren't kicking off.

Best team won there, they had the stamina and experience. We've got a brilliant team so early, looking forward to seeing Croatia win the cup!

@JoelStinty I do know, but behind that self deprecation, there's an element of truth. People were truly believing that England could win it, even before the round of 16 as Armoured Bear pointed out.

I drew a picture of a cephalopod on a blancmange, laid it on a £165 pillow and punched it and I felt much better about England's exit

Facebook, Twitter and newspapers full of the usual conspiracy theories about corrupt referees, everyone ganging up on them, Croatians cheating, etc.. I only wish people were as magnanimous as the team itself. Southgate and the lads are role models that few people seem to want to live up to...

Also, living in Germany and seeing a lot of Germans cheer on and consequently mourn for the English team shames me to be British-born, especially given how spiteful many of the British were about Germany's exit from the cup (in particular this highly publicised example).

I watched a Euro 96 documentary the other day and some of press headlines for England vs Germany were awful.

Good to see social media blaming it on the spurs players... easy to forget all those tournament wins when we had the best Utd, arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool had to offer.

Late to the party/previous posts in the thread over last 12 hours, but just to say totally agree. I love all the home nations to get to Euro/WC makes for more interest and tension.

Conversely I do not follow fellow nation teams in Champs League etc, once we are out...assuming we are in! then I do not want any other British team to win it. In saying that I would have been "ok" had LFC done so last season!

Yeah, there was some pretty racist stuff there. And Germany isn't always as innocent. There's one tabloid rag here - Bild - that's notorious for taking cheap shots at the English side. Today was unfortunately no exception, with them gleefully headlining the article "England's coming home" and closing the article with "England gets to keep dreaming about its only World Cup victory 52 years ago".

(It's incredibly spiteful, but there's an element of truth there - the fact that the English seem to imagine themselves as one of the major World Cup contenders when in reality, nobody else thinks of them as that.)

In any case, this kind of spite is very much a minority here. As I said, everyone I could see was rooting for England last night.

@FilthyAnimal it's more to do with the press (Express, Mail and Sun) not being able to forget the war. They bring it up almost every opportunity. It's nauseating.

    FTFY.

Good match, sad to see England lose. They do seem to be playing a different game than the other teams. A game that doesn't involve hacking and wrestling. Meh. Will be cheering on Croatia in the finals.
