Wouldn't you have to have won something significant and be a bit part of doing so to be considered world class? -

The term world class seems to get used a lot. Anyone who's been in a World Cup, European or Champions League final and won it and who is consistently playing at a high level I'd consider to be world class.

It's an incredibly meaningless term.
Anyone who's played at a world cup is technically "world class" -

Registered 16 years agoMy brothers very stringent definition of world class is 'would get into a world XI (or at a push a world XXIII)'.
If you suggest someone is world class he will, somewhat rainman like, reel off everyone better in that position. -

I think we should steal the NBA version of having 1st, 2nd and 3rd All NBA teams. Do a GK, 4 defenders, 4 midfielders and 2 forwards then we can argue forever about whether or not so and so actually counts as a midfielder or forward and whoever is popular in china will run away with the voting every year.
What could possibly go wrong. -

EDIT: Specifically the winning stuff metric. Why's the so crucial? To Nick's point, you'd be hard pressed to find a better number 9 than Harry Kane in the world. He's almost certainly play in that position in a world XI. But as you say, he hasn't won anything, so you're not considering him world class.
Essentially what you're saying is to be world class you have to play for one of the handful of clubs that dominate domestic football, and/or be Brazilian, French, German or Italian.

Registered 18 years agoThere is also the consideration that football is a team game, and no single individual can force success if those around him are not good enough. Would we really say that George Best could not be considered world class within his era? The idea that he would have to carry Northern Ireland to international success is not only laughable but also quite insulting.
Harry Kane is world class. How many more times does he have to prove his detractors wrong? He could go to Madrid and bang in 50 a season, and there would still be people insisting he hasn't proved himself until England win a major championship. -

Registered 13 years agoKane is world class and doesn't need to win an international trophy to prove it, but he needs to win a relevant trophy soon.
Otherwise, scoring 30+ PL goals every season and having no trophy in the cabinet is the same as scoring sub-10 PL goals a season and having no trophies in the cabinet. -

You've scored an extra 20+ goals a season and probably have numerous golden boot trophies. -
Gary Lineker won very little, was he world class?
