Australia just snuck through to the next stage last night, against Syria. It was a fucking shambles, only saved by two goals from 37-year-old Tim Cahill.

...this is not going to go well for us

Ha, typical that the close season that Alexis won't be going to some tournament or other is the year he won't be playing for us!

Argentina have qualified but USA haven't.

Would have been weird without Argentina there.

Yeah, really weird. Even the US has become a bit of a mainstay. Have they even missed one in the last 30 years?

If other teams get more points than you they're going to qualify instead of you. Enough said.

I would honestly quite like to see Argentina win the WC, if only to put the ridiculous argument that Messi can't be considered the GOAT until he wins it to bed. Particularly as Cronaldo somehow managed to blag a Euros trophy.

    Vamoooooooos Peru!!!

Made the playoff against New Zealand. Amazing. Was not expecting Paraguay to lose to Venezuela, but bloody glad they did. Last time Peru made the World Cup, Sotland were there!
FFS. We only missed one (1994) between 1974 and 1998!

What a load of crap. So however good you are, you canít be the GOAT unless you happen to hail from one of the half-dozen countries with a realistic chance of winning the WC?

    Like I say, it's a ridiculous argument.

It's only used so that people can argue that Maradona was better as he single-handedly dragged Argentina to a title.

My point exactly when you lose to Trinidad you don't deserve to go to a world cup.
It's a good point. If other teams win more games than you it means they get points. The teams with the most points deserve to go through to the next stage while the teams with less points should go out. It's as simple as that at the end of the day.

Yeah, then we can know the only thing that separates him and Ronnie is doing it in more than 1 league. until he comes and rips it up with City

I prefer Messi to Ronaldo because he is Enano not Adonis. I prefer unpredictable natural genius over ego-driven perfectionist dedication. I think the best players should create for others as well as for themselves.

And I fu#king hate step overs.

If they had played in a proper league they probably wouldn't have broken 20 goals a season between them

It depends how you judge these things. Peak Ronaldhino was arguably better than peak Messi. But peak Ronaldhino lasted maybe two seasons. You could put a similar case forward for Maradona as well.

But nobody with the possible exception of Pele and Cronaldo has maintained such a high level for such a long time. Especially not playing at the highest competitive domestic level. Cronaldo is really the only other one you can compare in that respect and even he took longer to hit top gear.

And even without that consideration, it's still highly debatable whether anyone has surpassed Messi. Certainly not 14 greater than symbols surpassed.

That's a fair point about his consistency over such a long period, in terms of outrageous, flamboyant skill I'd say Ronaldhino and Maradona were 'better' than Messi but maybe 14 was pushing it :)

Yeah, him and Zidane are my two favourites of all time for their ability to use 'tricks' in a meaningful match-winning way. Very rare.

But I also think Messi can not be rated highly enough. He is absolutely ridiculous. I watched a compilation of his assists and chances created the other day, and that alone was mind-blowing. His vision and execution is absolutely unreal. And that's without considering the billion goals he's scored.

Yeah, the impressive thing with Messi for me is that he makes it look so easy. His close control is mesmerising and he just glides past people, then you get to his passing, particularly inside, and the weight is just perfect. Brilliant, brilliant player.

Shawcross would sort him out in the first minute of the game.
